WhoWhatWhy is seeking a passionate, high-energy individual who is excited to help us organize and implement our many exciting ideas and initiatives, while sharing insights on how to get us to the next level. As a startup, we are looking for people who would bring structure and scale to the complex growth challenges of a nonprofit organization by rolling up their sleeves to get stuff done! In addition to doing groundbreaking work, this role will be pivotal in establishing a culture of openness, positive communication, and continuous learning.

Our organization is a nonprofit that is not funded by a zillionaire. We do not accept corporate ads. As such, we are only currently able to pay a small core team, as well as experienced professional freelancers, relying primarily on skilled volunteers to fill out our growing organizational infrastructure.

Age does not matter. We have among us young students, vibrant retirees, and everything in between, from all walks of life.

About the Role:

WhoWhatWhy, is looking for a volunteer Email Marketing Specialist with a strong marketing background. If you enjoy the technical side of email marketing and have a knack for building and maintaining mailing lists, we’d love to have you on our team.

In this role, you'll develop and execute high-volume email campaigns, identify target audiences, grow our email lists, and ensure mobile-friendly email templates. You'll keep our email communication prompt and accurate to minimize unsubscribes, oversee technical aspects of email marketing, and conduct research to better understand our subscribers.

You'll review past campaigns to identify strengths and weaknesses, set goals for new campaigns, and maintain our subscriber database. Knowledge of email marketing and Mailchimp is essential, along with 1-3 years of experience in email marketing or a related field.

You’ll work closely with a diverse team and gain invaluable experience in a collaborative environment.

Note: Must be able to attend bi-weekly meetings, Fridays at 1:00 PM EST

Key Responsibilities:

  • Create and manage all email and SMS campaigns, including designing emails, coordinating assets, and scheduling sends.
  • Support various programs by running manual and automated email campaigns for different stages of the customer journey, such as new prospects, returning customers, and those who’ve made a purchase.
  • Build and target specific audience groups for each campaign to improve engagement and meet our goals.
  • Oversee the email/SMS marketing schedule, making sure it aligns with our business needs and plans.
  • Use customer data to personalize messages and content.
  • Set up and run tests to see what works best, including different subject lines, content, and sending times, then use the results to make improvements.
  • Collaborate with technical team members to ensure our emails follow best practices and are optimized for performance.
  • Manage how often we send emails and messages to avoid overwhelming our subscribers.
  • Test emails on different devices and email platforms to ensure they display correctly.
  • Track and report on how well our campaigns are performing, including metrics like open rates, click rates, and conversions.
  • Keep up with trends and new ideas from other top brands to find ways to improve our email marketing strategies and keep our customers engaged.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in marketing, communications, or a related field.
  • 1-3 years of experience in Email Marketing or Direct Marketing, including designing and building campaigns, executing campaign automation, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience with building and managing email campaigns in Mailchimp.
  • Proficiency in marketing automation technology and hands-on experience with marketing automation platforms.
  • Knowledge of SEO/SEM, Google Analytics, HTML/CSS, A/B Testing, and other CMS tools.
  • Experience tracking and reporting on email engagement using Google Analytics.
  • Familiarity with analytical and database tools such as Hubspot, Mailchimp, SendinBlue, and WixShoutout.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Self-motivated, able to achieve goals with minimal supervision, and enjoy working both independently and collaboratively with a team.
  • Hands-on knowledge of email regulations, best practices, and compliance standards internationally, including GDPR and CASL.
  • Proven experience in growing, engaging with, and analyzing the performance of a large email marketing database.
