The opportunity

Harvard Business Publishing’s Corporate Learning division targets enterprises that recognize leadership development as a source of competitive advantage. The Corporate Learning (CL) team’s expertise is in creating rich, interactive learning experiences that develop leaders who shape their organizations’ futures by making smart decisions at critical moments.

The Principal Learning Partner (PLP) holds a senior position within the account team in partnership with the Relationship Manager (RM) and Customer Success Manager (CSM).  Primary accountability for the PLP is to bring thought leadership and instructional design expertise to our clients to improve leadership skills that impact organizational success. In this role, the PLP is responsible for leading solution design, driving account expansion, revenue, and ensuring profitability. The PLP partners with RMs to drive new client acquisition and deepen existing relationships by consulting with client stakeholders across multiple functions and levels. They endeavor to integrate themselves as a trusted adviser in targeted accounts to extend the reach of current solutions and establish HBP as an enterprise learning partner.

The PLP is a thought leader in leadership development and learning solution design and is sought after for advice and perspective on emerging trends, best practices of others in the industry, as well as proven and impactful strategies for effective learning.  S/he/they have deep talent development and consulting expertise, a broad and deep understanding of Harvard Business Publishing (HBP) content and offerings, design and development capability, and a comprehensive understanding of how technology and AI solutions play in the leadership development space. The PLP can consult credibly with and understand the perspectives of client stakeholders, using strong relationship development and consultation skills. The have effective team leadership skills and the ability to collaborate with and influence colleagues and clients, as well as strong commercial and business acumen. S/he/they will ensure account profitability and solution quality through effective collaboration with multiple teams within Corporate Learning’s (CL) and HBP’s ecosystems.

S/he/they are effectively able to leverage her/his/their time across a portfolio of client accounts plus new business opportunities to achieve maximum impact and meet clients’ development and business priorities.  

Key Responsibilities: (specific key duties/responsibilities of position)

  • Client Portfolio Development
    • Partners with RM to discover and articulate clients’ business challenges, people strategies, and key leadership development priorities.
    • Co-develops account strategy and account plans to achieve revenue and expansion goals, and further qualified opportunities to develop leaders at all levels by leveraging HBP's thought leadership and CL solutions.
    • Ensures solution relevance and feasibility for both HBP and client.
  • Leadership Development Thought Leader
    • Represents HBP’s ideas and insights to clients by staying current on HBP and HBS research, and trends in leadership and learning design to create impactful learner experiences that create value for clients. 
    • Leverages deep business acumen and knowledge of external factors (e.g., regional economy, competition, learning trends, learning technology) to lead business conversations and consult with colleagues and with clients/prospects.
    • Innovates learning designs to meet unique client challenges and create business impact, while delivering profitable growth.  
    • Takes ownership for professional development of key skills related to current role.
  • Solution Architect
    • Collaborates cross-functionally to sell, design, and deliver profitable, scalable solutions that meet clients' leadership development needs.
    • Diagnoses gaps in leadership development and formulates profitable, scalable solutions based on standard CL products and services.
    • Leverages their understanding of learning technologies to advise clients on the best implementation strategy for their learning ecosystem and learner needs.
    • Builds engaging learning experiences aligned to identified learning objectives and designed to produce agreed upon performance outcomes.
    • Encourages divergent thinking in oneself, HBP team members, and clients.
    • Facilitates candid dialogues about leadership development challenges and possible solutions with key stakeholders across client organizations.

Requirements: (education, experience, communication/organization skills, work environment, etc.)

  • 10+ years applicable experience
  • Demonstrated ability and experience in the following:
    • Consulting /designing/delivering leadership and management development programs
    • In depth knowledge and experience with technology delivered learning solutions
    • Delivering consulting and professional services for complex learning solutions and/or working in a learning and development organization
    • Conducting conversations that explore business needs and position potential solutions with clients across various levels in the client organization
    • Contributing to a community practice on learning and leadership development trends
    • Managing a portfolio of client solutions.
  • Comfortable and effective in a consultative selling environment.
  • Strong interpersonal skills combined with collaboration and team leadership abilities.
  • Strong financial and business acumen skills. 
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills.
  • Self-motivated and able to thrive in a demanding, fast-paced, and remote working environment.
  • 4-year degree, graduate degree preferred.
  • Travel requirement approximately 10%.

Above is the annualized pay range for this position. In addition, this position includes the opportunity to earn our annual Performance Based Variable Pay Program. Actual salary will be set based upon a range of factors, including external benchmark market data, individual knowledge, skills, experience, location and internal equity.
