About Faithful America

Faithful America is the nation’s largest online community of grassroots Christians working to renew the church's prophetic role in building a more free and just society, and to reclaim Christianity from the hateful agenda of the religious right.

Since 2004, we have consistently made headlines and won real, Gospel-based victories by using rapid-response digital campaigns that tap into the grassroots power of Christians across the nation.

In this moment of political and theological crisis for American Christianity, we’re putting our faith into action to connect and mobilize our members to protect multiracial democracy, advance social justice, love their neighbors, and confront threats to the church’s prophetic calling -- especially the forces of Christofascism, white Christian nationalism, and MAGA’s twisting of faith and abuse of Jesus’s holy name.

As part of that, we’re working hard to oppose the election of Donald Trump.

About the Role

Faithful America is looking for a Digital Campaigner to help develop, draft, and execute digital advocacy campaigns, primarily focusing on email. The Digital Campaigner will additionally have some lightweight responsibilities related to curating and producing content for our social media channels.

We are open to candidates with different types of experience profiles and skill sets, but this is not an entry-level job.

Are you a good writer with at least 1-2 years of relevant digital experience who can draft clean, persuasive, well-messaged copy on tight deadlines?

Are you a fast learner who is comfortable with technology and not afraid to learn and use new online tools?

Are you a detail-oriented self-starter eager to organize progressive Christians for the values of love, equality, and social justice that Jesus taught -- and to help them take on the hateful agenda of the religious right.

If so, please read on!

Responsibilities

  • Write compelling action alerts, event announcements, and other messages to the Faithful America email list.
  • Set up campaign emails and landing pages using our online advocacy software/CRM (ActionKit).
  • Project-manage email campaigns through the editing, quality-assurance and approval processes.
  • Create, curate and post content to Faithful America’s social-media channels, ensuring content is posted on an appropriate cadence.
  • Create and lightly edit videos for our video and social-media channels.
  • Work with the Campaigns Director to identify, design, and implement strategic advocacy campaigns that confront white supremacy and Christian nationalism; reduce the power of the religious right; and advance Gospel-based progressive policies on democracy, LGBTQ equality, immigration, climate change, racial justice, and other moral issues.
  • Research strategic leverage points for our campaigns and campaign targets, particularly right-wing lawmakers, the Protestant religious right, elements of the U.S. Catholic hierarchy, the New Apostolic Reformation, and the MAGA movement
  • Provide feedback and proofreading on campaign emails and other written materials by other Faithful America campaigners.
  • Help organize in-person petition deliveries and other volunteer opportunities for Faithful America members.
  • Run and disseminate regular reports on social media and campaign metrics.
  • Participate in regular meetings, listservs, and conversations with Faithful America staff, contractors, and members
  • Other relevant campaign and administrative duties as they arise.

Success in the First 12 Months of this Role Looks Like

  • In collaboration with others on the team, you are generating ideas for petitions and campaigns that are both impactful and of interest to our Christian membership -- and then you are fleshing out those ideas by drafting quality emails, related social media content, and other written materials in Faithful America’s voice and tone.
  • You have a working knowledge of ActionKit, allowing you to load emails, build landing pages, pull simple reports, download petitions for delivery, and make necessary changes to members' accounts on your own.
  • You are contributing to the development of the social media calendar and leading the execution of that calendar on a day-to-day basis: posting about Faithful America's work, finding and sharing quality content that our members enjoy, and creating and experimenting with some exciting content of your own.
  • You have a growing knowledge and understanding of the diverse experiences of Christianity embodied by our members, as well as of Christian nationalism and the religious right.
  • You are communicating in a healthy way with your colleagues -- participating in strategic campaign planning discussions, helping troubleshoot problems, and assisting others when needed.

Qualifications

There’s generally no such thing as a perfect candidate. If you don’t check all of the boxes below, but are interested and think you can do this job successfully, we welcome your application.

You could be great for this role if:

  • You’re excited to organize grassroots Christians online for social justice, and resonate deeply with Faithful America’s progressive Christian mission and vision.
  • You have at least 1-2 years of relevant digital experience, and understand the basic principles of email campaigning, online-to-offline organizing, or social justice advocacy work.
  • You’re a strong writer who is able to write clean, compelling and well-messaged copy on tight deadlines, and you have experience in a collaborative writing environment where others have edited your writing.
  • You have some experience with production and quality assurance in CRMs, blast email tools, and/or digital activism tools -- or you have other skills or experience that demonstrate your aptitude to learn these tasks quickly and do them well.
  • You possess basic HTML skills and know how to use Excel or Google Sheets to do basic data analysis. More broadly, you’re comfortable with technology and not afraid to learn and use new online tools.
  • You have at least some theological education or strong familiarity with American Christianity or one or more U.S. Christian communities.
  • You have solid design chops. You don’t need to be a graphic designer, but you should have an eye for design and at least some ability to use software like Photoshop or Illustrator, basic video editing tools, meme & GIF generators, and/or apps like Canva.
  • You have a strong and consistent attention to detail, and can juggle competing priorities without letter things fall through the cracks.
  • You possess an adaptable style and can move a project forward even amid ambiguity and complexity.
  • You’re both an accountable self-starter with a high degree of initiative and a good team player who can take direction and receive feedback well.
  • You can work well with others across various dimensions of personal difference, and have both an awareness of and appreciation for cultural diversity.
  • You have a social and political understanding of various types of systemic oppression -- such as white supremacy, patriarchy, and heteronormativity (as distinct from overt bigotry or discrimination) -- and are committed to fighting oppression in its many forms.
  • You have a growth mentality, you take calculated risks, and you are eager to experiment and apply the lessons learned to your work.

Although not required, a strong candidate will have some of the following:

  • More than 2 years of direct-response copywriting experience in an email advocacy, digital fundraising, online organizing or digital marketing context. At least six months of experience writing action alerts or fundraising emails on a daily or weekly basis for progressive causes, campaigns or organizations would be especially valuable.
  • Any other kind of copywriting experience that involved writing lots of content under tight deadlines.
  • You’re comfortable enough in the backend of ActionKit or another digital advocacy CRM or blast email tool to use the tool in a day-to-day manner independently to build email campaigns, and you're able to troubleshoot most common problems on your own.
  • Experience working in a digital capacity for a progressive organization with a large or sophisticated email program.
  • Experience running A/B tests and drawing actionable insights from digital metrics and analytics data.
  • Experience working with a team to quickly develop and implement creative and strategic digital campaigns in response to a rapidly shifting situation.
  • More than 2 years experience working in faith-based, progressive advocacy or community-based organizations, or in religion journalism.
  • Experience in church leadership and/or a degree (undergraduate or graduate) in divinity, theology or religion (especially if focused on political or social issues)
  • Experience managing or producing content for organizational or high-profile individual social media accounts, particularly with large or influential audiences
  • Some experience helping run advocacy campaigns that exerted public pressure on specific, named leaders or institutions (whether in politics, religion, business, or some other field)
  • Experience identifying opportunities for breakout campaigns amid current events and brainstorming innovative strategies and tactic.s
  • A strong command of HTML, database queries, web development, video editing and/or graphic design.
  • Policy expertise about (or a history of active personal involvement in social movements that work to support) LGBTQ equality, democracy, racial justice, immigrant rights, economic justice, and/or the environment
  • A strong understanding of the intersection of faith and politics today in the U.S., as well as some familiarity with the religious right, progressive faith-based organizing and advocacy organizations, and/or the role religion plays in elections and the broader culture.
  • Relevant relationships with and familiarity with the values and mindsets of diverse U.S. Christian communities. This might look like:
    • Relationships with exvangelical leaders, organizations, and communities, and an understanding of the hurt that the church often causes.
    • Relationships within and knowledge of the Black church, other church communities primarily composed of BIPOC Christians (e.g. Spanish-speaking congregations), or related institutions.
    • Relationships within and knowledge of LGBTQ Christian communities.
    • Relationships within Roman Catholic communities and institutions, and an understanding of internal U.S. Roman Catholic politics and the U.S. hierarchy.
    • Other relationships and knowledge comparable to the one of the above.
