As an ASL Interpreter at Columbus Colony Elderly Care, you will provide professional sign language interpretation services to facilitate effective communication between Deaf, Deaf/Blind, or Hard-of-Hearing individuals and hearing individuals within the facility. You will ensure that all parties involved have equal access to information, services, and opportunities, fostering inclusivity and understanding.

This position will primarily be evenings and weekends.

Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Provide accurate and confidential ASL interpretation services during interactions between Deaf, Deaf/Blind, or Hard-of-Hearing individuals and hearing individuals, including staff meetings, medical appointments, social activities, and educational sessions.
  • Facilitate communication by interpreting spoken language into ASL and ASL into spoken language, conveying the message faithfully and impartially while maintaining cultural sensitivity and neutrality.
  • Remain impartial and neutral in all interpreted interactions, refraining from providing personal opinions, advice, or emotional involvement, and maintaining confidentiality at all times.
  • Adapt interpreting style and strategies to meet the needs and preferences of Deaf, Deaf/Blind, or Hard-of-Hearing individuals, including preference for ASL dialects, visual communication cues, and speed of interpretation.
  • Serve as a cultural and linguistic bridge between Deaf, Deaf/Blind, or Hard-of-Hearing individuals and hearing individuals, providing clarification, context, and cultural insights as needed to promote understanding and effective communication.
  • Prepare for interpreting assignments by familiarizing yourself with relevant terminology, concepts, and subject matter, and researching specialized vocabulary or jargon as needed to ensure accurate interpretation.
  • Maintain professional boundaries and ethical standards in all interactions, including adherence to the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) Code of Professional Conduct and confidentiality guidelines.
  • Collaborate with other interpreters, staff members, and service providers to coordinate interpreting services and ensure seamless communication access for all parties involved.
  • Stay informed about current trends, best practices, and professional development opportunities in the field of ASL interpreting, and participate in training and continuing education activities to enhance skills and knowledge.

Required Skills/Abilities:

  • National certification as a Qualified or Certified Interpreter preferred, or willingness to obtain certification within a specified timeframe.
  • Strong knowledge of ASL linguistics, Deaf culture, and communication access technology, including video remote interpreting (VRI) systems and communication apps.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and cultural competency skills, with the ability to build rapport and trust with diverse individuals and groups.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment, prioritize tasks, and adapt to changing priorities and client needs.

Education and Experience:

  • Associates degree in ASL Interpreting, Deaf Studies, Communication Disorders, or related field required; certification as a Registered Interpreter (RID) preferred.
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience in ASL interpreting, with demonstrated proficiency in both receptive and expressive skills, preferred.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to perform tasks requiring standing, sitting, and manual dexterity for extended periods.
  • Visual acuity and auditory ability to accurately perceive and interpret ASL signs and gestures, communicate effectively, and respond to inquiries.
