Summary/ Objective

 

East Side House, founded in 1891, is a 501(c) (3) organization that has served the South Bronx since 1963. The organization is dedicated to the community and focused on providing resources and opportunities. East Side House has identified that education is the foundation for economic improvement and through its youth education and technology programs it teaches skills to allow its students and clients to become more self-sufficient and independent. As a community resource the organization also provides services to families and a growing senior population. In 2020 the organization began food distribution as an additional way to provide economic support to the community we serve. 

 

ESH’s Youth After-School Academy, a literacy-focused after school program for students in grades 6 through 8 from high-poverty communities in Bronx, NY. ESH managed After School Programs offer students additional learning time in a fun, engaging, and safe environment. Students are offered a wide variety of activities including homework help, robotics, team sports, karate, dance, and music. Educational methods are used to build and reinforce the skills needed to reach New York State standards for promotion and graduation. 

 

Under the supervision of the Program Director, the Program Assistant will be responsible for performing each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skills and ability required, but not limited to:

 

Essential Functions

 

Duties and Responsibilities of Program Assistant shall include but not limited to the following:

  1. Assist with creating structured systems for curriculums and program schedule.
  2. Work with Education Specialist to implement engaging, developmentally appropriate educational enrichment curriculum and programming which expands and supports student learning experiences beyond the classroom.
  3. Develop and maintain professional working relationships through effective and timely communication with the program director, other program personnel, and other building staff members, such as the principal, custodians, teachers, and food service personnel.
  4. Work cooperatively and effectively as a team member by communicating and contributing information on a continuous basis.
  5. Assist the program director in addressing the ongoing needs of the students and parents.
  6. Implement program procedures effectively to ensure the safe being of all participants.
  7. Observe, monitor, and participate in student activities.
  8. Promote a safe and healthy environment based on safety standards set within the program.
  9. Effectively monitor and guide proper student behavior on a continuous basis.
  10. Support the emotional and social development of students.
  11. Report any concerns and questions regarding the program (students, parents, equipment needs, supplies, other staff, volunteers, etc.) to the program director.
  12. Maintain accurate and organized records such as attendance records, snack records, timesheets, incident reports, and all other paperwork as instructed by the program director to ensure program compliance and quality operations.
  13. Monitor transitions to cafeteria and ensure upkeep of space.
  14. Assist in the cleaning and straightening of the room and equipment before, during, and after the program. This includes washing tables, chairs, and toys, putting up chairs, and locking the building at the end of the day.
  15. Oversee program operations in absence of Program Director
  16. Attend DOE/ESH meetings (i.e., safety, CBO)
  17. Co-facilitate bi-weekly staff meeting and assist in development of agenda items.
  18. Manage supply inventory and submit purchase request as needed to Program Director for approval.
  19. Facilitate the creation, editing and distribution of program newsletter.
  20. Continue professional development by attending staff meetings and trainings as required and as appointed by the program director.  
  21. Demonstrate behavior that is professional, ethical, and responsible.
  22. Enjoy being with students and foster their academic, social, emotional, and physical development through the duties outlined above.

 

Remote Engagement:

 

  1. Experience facilitating live and pre-recorded activities.
  2. Familiarity using web-based platforms to engage participants: zoom, google classrooms, etc.
  3. Monitor participant engagement and safety while on live sessions remotely.
  4. Facilitate wellness checks/calls to families.
  5. Follow remote working plan, policies & procedures as highlighted by the supervisor.
  6. Maintain remote/virtual attendance logs & records.
  7. Ensure the safety of program staff and participants over remote platform.

Qualifications

Minimum requirements:

  1. Associate degree, knowledgeable of youth development principles and practices and two years of experience working with Middle School youth.
  2. Able to work in team settings and with diverse individuals.
  3. Able to work in a fast-paced environment.
  4. Strong critical thinking skills.
  5. Excellent organizational, verbal, written and communications skills.
  6. Ability to work with culturally diversified individuals.
  7. Computer literate.
  8. Bilingual is a plus.

 

Preferred Qualifications

  1. Successful completion of higher education coursework related to education, and child development.
  2. Experience implementing educational programming and working with students as a teacher, educational aide, after school care aide, and/or daycare operator or assistant.
  3. A high sense of professionalism.

 

Expected Work Schedule

This is a full-time position.

 

School Year: Availability between 8 am - 6 pm; Monday-Friday

 

Summer: Availability between 8 am - 6pm; Monday- Friday

 

Workdays/hours subject to change based on ESH’s needs.

 

Required Clearances

  • Clearance by the Department of Health (DOH)
  • Clearance by the Department of Education (DOE)
  • Clearance from the New York State Child Abuse Registry ($25.00 fee)
  • Staff Exclusion List (SEL) clearance
  • Physical with TB test
  • COVID Vaccine

 

Work Environment

This job operates in a professional school environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines.

 

 

Physical Demands

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. This is generally a sedentary role; however, some filing, and site visits are required. This would require the ability to lift files, open filing cabinets and bend or stand on a stool as necessary.
