Job Description

NREL’s Communications Office has two openings for a Professional II Communications Coordinator to support communications for the lab’s Water Power research. The ideal candidates will be skilled in digital platforms, project management, writing, and communications planning; pay meticulous attention to detail and quality; and demonstrate the ability to maintain strong and collaborative working relationships with clients and team members.

This position is a great fit for a communications professional who:

  • Finds joy in making scientific and technical content relatable, understandable, and memorable to a wide range of audiences.

  • Is comfortable managing layered communications projects with parallel tasks, deliverables, and collaborators.

  • Enjoys building client and team relationships to become a trusted strategic partner.

  • Is nimble and wants a workload that strikes the balance between developing creative and strategic communications solutions and tracking details, budgets, and deadlines.

The successful candidates will be part of a highly collaborative communications team in an agency-like setting that includes project managers, editors, graphic designers, web specialists, multimedia specialists, and writers. The team creates integrated communications and outreach campaigns and publishes owned content across multiple channels on behalf of NREL and DOE Water Power clients.

Communications Professional IIs are involved in all aspects of a communications project—from planning and execution to evaluation, helping to keep projects on track, and working closely with collaborators across the communications office. They coordinate multiple moderately complex communications projects and budgets under general supervision, use established procedures, develop, and track multiple deliverables in parallel, and work against deadlines.

Primary job functions will include:

  • Coordinate, execute, and measure the communication of scientific and complex technical topics from researchers and DOE for a variety of plain language audiences and outlets.

  • Project management, including tracking project requests, timelines, and small to medium budgets using the team’s project management tool, and collaborating with team members.

  • Collaborate with clients and team members to plan, create, and coordinate written content for news stories, newsletters, reports, videos, social media, web, and other outreach materials.

  • Under general direction, serve as main client contact for communications deliverables and small campaigns.

  • Work with writers, editors, and graphic designers to ensure adherence to NREL and DOE style, brand guidelines, web standards, and best practices.

  • Provide regular project progress status updates to team and clients.

  • Build and maintain positive relationships with clients and colleagues.

With your application, please include a cover letter describing why you’re interested in this position and highlighting your specific communications work experience and qualifications for this role.
