The Senior IT Data Engineer is a hands-on position using a modern data engineering stack deployed within the Microsoft Azure cloud. The successful candidate will develop and support a wide variety of data engineering pipelines utilizing tools including Azure Databricks, Azure Data Factory, Azure Data Lake Store and Azure Synapse. This role requires exceptional skills in acquiring data from various sources, implementing complex data transformations, and deploying the results for use by data analysts and data scientists. The successful candidate will work hand-in-hand within a dedicated team of business analysts, data analysts, business SMEs, data engineers and data architects to develop and support the next generation of Smithfield’s data engineering and analytics solutions.
Core Responsibilities
Implement complex production scheduling logic utilizing a combination of SQL and Python on the Apache Spark/Databricks platform
Design, develop, deploy and support data pipelines using a combination of SQL and Python functions, programs, routines and stored procedures to export, transform and load data
Create and maintain code module design documents and run books
Follow standard processed for management of pipeline orchestration, source code control, error/event handling, CI/CD, access control
Partner with data architects and analysts to adopt reusable data pipeline design patterns
Work with IT, business and data management teams to understand data needs and develop solutions
Develop and execute test plans and scenarios including data design, tool design, data extract/transform, networks and hardware
Work with Business Analysts and other team members to support business case creation
Work with Business Analysts and other team members to understand requirements for data use, analysis, and quality
Work with Data Analysts, Data Engineers and Data Architects to design data repositories and pipelines
Develop solutions using architectural standards and consistency
Assist in the development of coding and documentation standards
Document code according to standards
Assist in assessing solution option risks and develop mitigation plans
Promote continuous improvement of operational solutions
Provide mentoring to junior team members

Qualifications
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited four-year college or university and 5+ years of relevant experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience, required.
Minimum of 5+ years experience in a Business Intelligence, Data Architecture or Data Engineering role or equivalent.
Advanced knowledge of data management, data integration and data platform development techniques required
Advanced knowledge of dimensional data modeling techniques for analytics required
Advanced knowledge of SQL programming, including demonstrated experience with a combination of 4 or more of the following: functions, stored procedures, cursors, common table expressions, dynamic SQL, data pivoting, query optimization, correlated subqueries, windowing functions, error handling and merge operations required
Advanced knowledge and experience with one or more computer programming languages such as, but not limited to C#, DAX, .NET, Python, SQL required
Demonstrated ability to design complex data solutions and collaborate with other team members for successful implementation
Demonstrated ability to teach complex topics to less technical team members
Demonstrated experience utilizing Python and SQL on the Apache Spark platform is preferred
Advanced knowledge of one or more data visualization tools including Power BI, Tableau, Qlik or similar is preferred
Demonstrated experience deploying data solutions using a modern data engineering stack composed of data lake, dimensional data warehouse and Apache Spark-based compute platform, preferred
Experience using code version control, CI/CD, error handling and lineage/audit capabilities in analytics data pipelines preferred
Experience with Microsoft Azure technologies strongly preferred
Ability to quickly learn and adopt new technology

Ability to communicate technical concepts in plain language
