Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Create complex structural engineering plans, details, and calculations for renewable energy and substation projects.
  • Design concrete foundations and steel structures using both standard shapes and tapered tubular sections to support project equipment while meeting jurisdictional requirements at local, State, and Federal levels for various environmental and geotechnical parameters.
  • Display a working knowledge of NESC transmission loads and loading combinations.
  • Apply advanced understanding of substation general arrangements and physical components.
  • Independently apply extensive and diversified knowledge of principles and practices.
  • Oversee projects in a portfolio or a suite of projects.
  • Review complete project documents for conformity and quality assurance.
  • Act as main point of contact for discipline or project team on portfolios.
  • Independently evaluate, select, and apply standard procedures, and criteria.
  • Develops a work plan for project tasks and discipline team members.
  • Will act as Engineer of Record for substation projects.
  • As a secondary responsibility, will act as cross-functional support for the PV/BESS team on utility-scale solar & storage projects.
  • Assigns tasks to and directs less experienced team members to complete assignments.
  • Assists with proposals to provide professional services.
  • Provides mentoring for staff engineers.
  • Seek guidance, when necessary, on unconventional or complex problems, direction on modified
  • techniques, and new approaches on assignments with conflicting criteria.
  • Attends project meetings and presents specific aspects of engineering assignments with high proficiency and confidence.
  • Perform essential duties including meeting deliverables and deadlines.
  • Ensure compliance with company, industry, trade, and jurisdictional safety standards, practices, codes.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned or directed.

Experience, Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:

  • Bachelor’s degree in civil or structural engineering.
  • Professional Engineering Licensure required; SE licensure is preferred.
  • 8+ years' experience in a substation structural engineering design role.
  • In-depth knowledge of software tools including RISA 2D/3D/Foundation, Enercalc, L-PILE, or similar.
  • Strong familiarity with ASCE 113, ASCE 7, ACI 318, AISC 360/341, IBC, NDS, and other relevant codes and standards.
  • Ability to read and understand site studies, geotechnical reports, and civil, structural, and architectural drawings.
  • Knowledge of steel structures, drilled piers, and shallow foundations.
  • Ability to identify and solve complex problems.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to be both creative and analytical.
  • Detail-oriented and accurate.
  • Efficient time management – handle multiple projects simultaneously and with minimal supervision including prioritizing, organizing, and planning effectively to meet all deadlines.
