We’re looking for software engineers with exceptional technical knowledge and experience, who love to solve complex problems at scale, and are interested in fixing America’s largest (and most broken) industry.

As a Principal Data Engineer, you will be a critical member of the Data Engineering team responsible for architecting, building and maintaining industry leading data infrastructure and data pipelines that connect to thousands of FHIR, CCDA, and other healthcare data sources, and scales to millions of users helping bring together a person’s health record in one place.

This position is available for fully remote work, is full time, and not open to contractors.

What You'll Do:

  • Design, Architect, build, and maintain b.well’s health care data platform infrastructure using Python, Databricks, Spark, Prefect, Kubernetes and other modern data stack technologies.
  • Work closely with data pipeline engineers to continue evolving our data platform so data pipeline engineers can rapidly develop, test and deploy pipelines into production that scale to millions of users
  • Provide leadership in strategic product/architectural direction across the company.
  • Independently proposes/designs/develops prototypes that lead to changes in product/infrastructure/platform.
  • Be recognized as an expert for services owned by the team.
  • Demonstrates an independent understanding of schedule, resource constraints, cross-team impact.
  • Recommend and drive strategic technology choices and directions that have a division-level impact.
  • Educate others in how data technology enables business across our brands and other company entities


Job Requirements:

  • 10+ years of professional programming experience (Python experience a +)
  • 5+ years of Spark and data engineering experience
  • 5+ year experience working in the HealthCare industry
  • 2+ years of experience with Databricks, Snowflake or other cloud data lake providers
  • Strong experience with unit testing and test-driven development
  • Strong experience with cloud-based infrastructure, architecture and streaming technologies
  • Experience mentoring other developers
  • Experience with architecture for technology solutions that support millions and billions of rows of data


Great to Have:

  • Experience with Airflow or Prefect
  • Expert experience with Databricks or other data lake platforms
  • Experience with Kafka or other event driven & streaming models
  • Deep understanding of common API methodologies
  • Startup experience


Blow Us Away:

  • Experience working with third-party healthcare APIs, HL7, data streams, and/or flat files
  • Experience in cybersecurity, HIPAA, HITECH, and HITRUST
  • An active GitHub profile or other public code portfolio
  • Active Stack Overflow profile
  • Documented work on open source projects


The target salary range for this position is $160,000 - $250,000 and is part of a competitive total rewards package including stock options, benefits, and incentive pay for eligible roles. Individual pay may vary from the target range and is determined by a number of factors including experience, location, internal pay equity, and other relevant business considerations. We review all employee pay and compensation programs annually at minimum to ensure competitive and fair pay.
