Job Description

A part of the Ultra Maritime Group, we are a UK based solutions provider and systems integrator operating in the Defence and Aerospace markets, delivering world leading products, solutions and services to our national and international customers.

We operate in the following areas:

Underwater Warfare: this includes working on game changing naval Integrated Sonar System (ISS), hull mounted anti-submarine warfare sonar system, towed array sonar systems, surface ship and submarine torpedo defence and countermeasures, and distributed anti-submarine warfare systems (sonobuoys), including Multi-Static Active (MSA) technologies.

Maritime: this includes new build and modernisation solutions for naval combat systems, combat management systems, electro optical surveillance and tracking, weapon fire control and servo control and signature measurement solutions for both surface and sub-surface platforms.

Purpose of Role

Due to the increasing demands to support both existing and forthcoming projects, Ultra are looking for talented and experienced software engineers to come into our team to help develop the next generation of Sonar Systems for our ASW product line. 

Ultra prides itself on world class engineering, delivering agile solutions to a wide range of customers across the world. With sites in the UK, Canada, and Australia the opportunities for the right candidates are extremely exciting.

Ultra is currently on a journey to improve the experience for its extremely capable development teams by adopting more Agile methods with DevOps playing an increasingly important role as we scale up the level of Continuous Integration and Automation in our delivery pipelines.

 As a result, we can provide the opportunity to work with some extremely bright and talented people, embedding the skills of mathematicians and physicists into signal processing and artificial intelligence that operates at the cutting edge of the defence industry.

In this role you will be working with a team of 50+ software developers designing, implementing, and testing solutions for sonar systems that will be delivered to a wide variety of different Navy’s from across the world.

Consequently, we have an immediate and ongoing requirement for passionate Software Engineers with strong software development skills in multithreaded C++, that have previously been applied in a similar domain, ideally in a Sonar or Radar context but applicants with relevant experience from other domains are also welcome.

Key Responsibilities

  • Software architectural design using UML and the Enterprise Architect tool.
  • Software Implementation and test in C++ including unit and continuous integration testing.
  • Pride in the development of good quality well thought-out code.
  • Peer reviewing the design and code of others and contributing to a community where learning and feedback is valued.
  • Integration, defect analysis and resolution to assist the verification teams with their work.
  • Progression of assigned stories and tasks in a product backlog using the Azure DevOps tool including estimation of remaining work.
  • Periodic verbal reporting of progress and contributing to sprint planning and retrospectives.

Skills, Qualification and Experience

  • Good experience in C++ development
  • Good experience in multi-threaded design
  • Good experience in UML design techniques
  • Good experience of the full software development lifecycle
  • Experience of Machine Learning or AI would be an advantage.
  • Experience of Python would be an advantage.
  • Experience of packaging tools and repositories such as Conan and Nexus would also be an advantage.

Personal Attributes

  • Currently holding or capable of holding UK SC clearance.
  • Commuting distance of our Weymouth office
