Responsibilities:

The Chief Underwriting Officer is responsible for the underwriting results of Acadia Insurance. The CUO supports the organization in developing and implementing strategic and tactical actions that support profitable growth and the realization of our vision to be a favorite risk partner by both insurance distributors and business owners. Key functions will include but are not limited to: 

 

  • Works with Claims, Underwriting, Actuarial and Shared Services to identify opportunities to improve underwriting results for Acadia Insurance.
  • Leads and implements special projects involving internal processes and information systems that help Acadia achieve profitable growth.
  • Monitor and evaluate industry, court and state regulatory developments and works directly with the Legal Department to ensure that Acadia is in compliance with all state laws, rules, and guidelines.
  • Partners with the other CUOs from Berkley Regional Companies to develop and implement underwriting strategies.
  • The CUO will be responsible for the implementation of these strategies at Acadia.
  • Monitors product, class and state performance and conducts necessary analysis developing recommendations and coverage and rate modifications to achieve targeted results. 
  • Partners with Actuarial and Berkley’s Reinsurance department to develop reinsurance programs consistent with our risk retention and performance performance objectives.
  • Responsible for the Home Office Underwriting quality reviews and results.
  • Provide technical training for commercial lines staff, including delivering content to the Basic and Intermediate Training Programs.
  • In collaboration with the actuary department, participates in the rate review process and ensures that the required filings are completed for each jurisdiction. 
  • Responsible for setting, monitoring, and evaluating levels of underwriting authority for each underwriting profit center.
  • Responsible for working with the leader of Acadia’s Loss Control Department. Collaborates with the leaders of Loss Control to continually increase effectiveness and efficiency by leveraging technology and third-party data and resources.
  • Ensures that communication channels across underwriting are productive by providing relevant and timely information and updates to all stakeholders.
Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent.
  • Minimum of 15 years equivalent experience in a commercial P&C underwriting.
  • Minimum of 10 years managing and leading teams.
  • Curious by nature, interested in challenging the status quo to discover solutions to unmet customer needs.
  • Experience with underwriting large accounts and portfolio (small business) underwriting.
  • Excellent communication skills (written and verbal).
  • Detail oriented with good follow-through skills.
  • Dependable and professional, self-starter, consistently demonstrating extreme ownership.
  • Proven energetic team player contributing to a learning organization with a strong performance-based culture.
  • Travel required.
  • Valid Driver’s License required.
