About The Role**

The Editorial Director is responsible for driving the strategic growth of a highly acclaimed books and major reference work portfolio in chemistry and chemical engineering, intended for students, lecturers, researchers and professionals in local and global markets. The Editorial Director leads a team of editors and is accountable for creating an environment of strong collaboration, both internally, and externally with global scientific and professional communities, all in support of best-in-class publishing. **

How You Will Make An Impact**

Drive publishing development of a book and major reference work portfolio:

  • Understand changes, trends and needs in publishing industries and within the academic and corporate subject-relevant communities and markets, as well as translating these into successful product and service offerings.
  • Ensure that portfolios are aligned with subject and customer needs.
  • Monitor and nurture brands and key partner relationships to ensure agreed outcomes, and evaluate and pursue additional opportunities as appropriate.
  • Ensure a data-driven approach to portfolio oversight with metrics regularly monitored and intervention where required.
  • Interpret market research and other data sources to drive good decision-making and successful development of products and profitability measures.
  • Acquire and develop new book projects, independently or through collaboration with others.

Collaboration And Management Of Your Team

  • Manage a team of acquisition editors.
  • Serve as role-model of Wiley’s values, provide guidance, inspiration and coaching for your team, and create an environment of embracing open discussions, innovation and continuous improvements.
  • Lead, motivate and inspire your team to create and deliver best-in-class publishing.
  • Work closely with Senior Editorial Director and other stakeholders on the divisional-level publishing strategy, output and marketing activities, agree on annual targets and share responsibility for the commercial performance.
  • Set individual performance targets for your team, monitor and manage performance towards results, coach and engage in your team’s personal development and learning, and be aware of staff wellbeing and satisfaction.

Contribute To Company Success

  • Manage, drive and initiate effective relationships beyond own division, e.g. with other editorial teams, sales, marketing, content management etc., to nurture synergies, increase efficiencies and optimize results.
  • Contribute to and ensure understanding and communication of key strategic goals, and work together with Senior Editorial Director and other stakeholders to translate enterprise and division strategies for your team and your portfolio.
  • Take part and encourage team to lean into cross-departmental projects and working groups to contribute, e.g. to business, process and cultural improvements.
  • Ensure the understanding and implementation of new policies, workflows, systems and processes to drive efficiencies.

What We Look For

  • Educated to a university degree level; degree in chemistry or chemical engineering or an advanced degree is desirable, but not essential.
  • Extensive experience in a global scientific/academic/professional publishing environment, preferably with strong roots in content acquisition and a wide range of product types.
  • Enthusiastic ambassador with experience in people management, including networking and team-building qualities, and leadership skills.
  • Strong track record of translating strategic goals and market opportunities into profitable products and businesses.
  • Broad experience in digital publishing, including a vision for functionalities beyond flat content.
  • Enthusiasm for scientific research and education with a comprehensive understanding of the respective environments, needs and challenges.
  • Strong negotiation, problem-solving, analytical and commercial skills.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Ability to travel and to represent the publishing house and division, both externally and internally.
