We are seeking our next Assistant/Associate Professor and Director of Surgical Skills. As Director, you will lead our veterinary surgical skills training program and work closely with the Director of Clinical Skills to deliver an integrated procedural skills curriculum that trains our students to be ready to enter practice at graduation. You will supervise veterinary students in performing surgical skills throughout our Phase I curriculum, including overseeing pre- and post-operative care of live animals undergoing surgery by our third year students. You will oversee a team of technicians that support the surgical skills program. You will also contribute to clinical instruction of clinical year students and house officers in primary care practice.
Assistant/Associate Professor and Director of Surgical Skills- Clinical Track
- Organize and lead teams consisting of faculty across multiple disciplines to deliver instruction of veterinary students in clinical and surgical skills using models, live animals, and cadavers. Provide and supervise veterinary students in pre-operative and post-operative care of live animals, including after hours or emergency care. Instruct in clinical and surgical skills laboratories and provide instruction in routine veterinary care. Develop and administer objective structured clinical skills examinations (OSCEs).
- Coordinate with faculty to create low-fidelity models to assist in instruction of surgical skills.
- Provide clinical practice support in small animal primary care practice and instruction of clinical veterinary students and house officers.
- Manage surgical skills personnel.
- Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
Assistant Professor: DVM degree or equivalent with three years of veterinary clinical practice experience, including surgery and dentistry.
Associate Professor: DVM degree or equivalent with eight years of veterinary clinical practice experience, including surgery and dentistry.
Preferred Qualifications (ALL LEVELS):
DVM degree or equivalent with 5 yrs. of clinical vet practice; 3 yrs. of experience in leadership role that involves management of personnel.
Special or Physical Qualifications (ALL LEVELS):
May be required to come in after hours, on weekends or holidays. Availability to work 8-10 hour shifts.
Per PS 18- This position is a part of the Emergency Response Personnel - these personnel are linked with the hospital during any emergency response event and are expected to report in and perform as outlined in the emergency response plan.
Required to be capable of lifting more than 50 pounds, standing, sitting and walking for prolonged periods, able to reach above and below the shoulder, vision (far sight), vision (near sight), kneel or sit on the floor, bending, climbing, push/ pulling, grasping, squatting, and/or twisting. Maneuver/lift equipment and materials weighing up to 50 pounds.
*Due to the nature of this position and/or responsibilities, this position is subject to random drug & alcohol testing in accordance with University Policy Statement 67*
Vehicle Operation - University employees whose principal responsibilities of employment include operating a vehicle, performing maintenance on a vehicle, or supervising any public employee who operates or maintains a vehicle and positions with an expectation to travel will require an MVR and are subject to drug screens per PM-33/PS-67/FASOP HR-04. A valid Driver's License is required.
FERPA - As with all LSU employees, due to this position title and/or responsibilities, this position has an obligation to assist students in the acquisition of necessary services. Should a student appear in need of or seek assistance with issues of an emotional, behavioral, or mental health related matter they should be referred to the proper service within the Student Health Center. In situations where the student creates an impression that they are a danger to themselves or others, the advisor should immediately contact the Care Team, the Dean of Students or the appropriate law enforcement agency. The employee outside of those rights contained within FERPA should create no impression of client or patient confidentiality. Minor Contact - This position and/or position's responsibilities require work directly with minors. Finger printing and National Sex Offender Registry check required per FASOP HR-04.
