About Us:

At the forefront of medical discovery as it relates to understanding the causes of obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, cancer and dementia, Pennington Biomedical Research Center is a campus of Louisiana State University and conducts basic, clinical and population research. The Center includes Basic Science, Clinical Research, and Population and Public Health, enabling both focused research and translational science. Research at Pennington Biomedical is supported broadly by multiple NIH Research Centers, and includes approximately 65 faculty and 20 postdoctoral fellows who comprise a network of 44 laboratories and 13 highly specialized core service facilities. Pennington Biomedical is located within state-of-the-art research facilities on a 222-acre campus in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.

Job Description:

Pennington Biomedical Research Center, a world-renowned academic research institute of Louisiana State University, is seeking a Roadmap Scholar for mentored development towards independence in the Louisiana Clinical and Translational Science (LA CaTS) Center. This is an Assistant Professor – Research position with Pennington Biomedical Research Center and candidates with a strong interest in clinical and translational research are encouraged to apply.

Each year LA CaTS selects eligible scholars into the 2-year Roadmap Scholars program. This program is for early career faculty who are entering clinical and translational research. The program provides protected time to develop an independent research program and mentor-directed training; it also covers the cost of a 40-credit Master of Science in Clinical Research (MSCR) degree from Tulane University, a requirement of the program. 

The Roadmap Scholars, together with their mentors, are required to develop a research program focused on health disparities in Louisiana targeted, but not limited to, obesity, type 2 diabetes, metabolic diseases, and their complications such as cardiovascular disease, cancer, and dementia/Alzheimer’s disease. The scholar will have the opportunity to work in a collaborative environment among faculty who are using clinical, basic, population, and translational approaches to find triggers and new treatments for chronic diseases. They will have priority access to the La CaTS Center Cores as well as the state-of-the-art clinical resources at Pennington Biomedical.

When the 2-year program complete, it is anticipated that the scholar will have competed successfully for an NIH Career Transition (K) award or its equivalent, permitting continued mentored career development.

Job Responsibilities

Years 1 - 2

  • Apply for and participate in the LA CaTS Roadmap Scholars (KL-2-like) program which requires the development and execution of a multidisciplinary education, training, and mentored research plan.

  • Complete a Master of Science in Clinical Research Degree from Tulane University (40-credit hours).

  • Devote at least 75% professional effort towards the program.

  • Travel to and present at the Association for Clinical and Translational Science annual meeting.

  • Attend and present at the LA CaTS Professional Development Core annual retreat.

  • Develop an independent research program and successfully compete for an NIH Career Transition (K) Award or its equivalent.

Job Responsibilities

Year 3  and beyond

  • Develop and execute clinical and translational research funded by NIH, federal agencies, and/or industry sponsors.

  • Maintain expertise in the medical field with appropriate board certification (MD only).

  • Serve on Center and profession-based committees as appropriate.

Minimum Qualifications

  • MD or PhD required.

  • Postdoctoral research, residency training, or integrated research and clinical training experience is required.

  • Must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident.

  • Interest in clinical and translational science with past evidence of significant productivity and promise.

  • Have not been a recipient of a K award from the NIH or have been a PI of an R01, R29, or P50 grant.

  • Experience in clinical research including externally funded clinical trials and prior history of independent funding is desirable.
