The Small Animal Surgery Lab Internship at Louisiana State University is a 1-year program designed to provide advanced training in the specialty of surgery.
Laboratory preparation and mentoring:
Phase 2 Surgery rotation labs (Monday mornings)
- VMED 5260 Principles of Veterinary Surgery (Spring Semester)
- VMED 5011 Advanced Veterinary Anesthesiology & Surgery Labs (Fall Semester)
- VMED 5010 Orthopedic and Soft Tissue Electives (4 weeks Spring Semester)
- VMED 5010 LSU-ASAP (Animal Sterilization Assistance Program)
- VMED 5457 Companion Animal Surgery Labs
- VCS 7202 Advanced Veterinary Surgical Techniques (Block change Monday mornings)
- Assist Veterinary Laborato1y Specialist in all surgery lab preparation, cleaning and organizing.
Research:
Participate in ongoing research projects of Companion Animal Surgery faculty as needed Bench research
- Bench research
- Clinical research
- Computer work
Conduct a small project under the direction of the Companion Animal Surgery faculty
- Original research- case series, bench research, clinical research
Hospital Participation in Companion Animal Surgery Service:
- Participate with clinical faculty in serving clients and operation of the hospital practice in the Companion Animal Surgery Service of the Veterinary Teaching Hospital & Clinics, including participation in the supervision of patient management and client communication. Participate in instruction to Year 4 veterinary students. Share in the emergency duty rotation in the Companion Animal Surgery Service.
Scholarly Requirements:
- Attend and participate in VCS Seminar Series (presentation of 1 seminar)
- Complete a manuscript suitable for publication.
Minimum Qualifications:
Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine or equivalent and Successful completion of a one-year internship or equivalent related veterinary experience.
Special or Physical Qualifications:
Required to work a variety of shifts including nights, weekends, holidays, and "on-call"/relief shifts.
Per PS 18- This position is a part of the Emergency Response Personnel - these personnel are linked with the hospital during any emergency response event and are expected to report in and perform as outlined in the emergency response plan.
Required to be capable of more than 50 pounds, standing or walking for prolonged periods, able to reach above and below the shoulder, vision (near sight), vision (far sight), kneel or sit on the floor, push/pulling, grasping, climbing, sitting, and/or bending
