Job Description:
The LSU VTH is open and accepts emergencies 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. Our state-of-the-art facilities provide immediate care and availability to a variety of diagnostics. The emergency service provides immediate triage, emergent medical therapies, and access to immediate test results as well as a full-service lab. Patients seen on this service are often treated and discharged; for many there is the availability/ access to be transferred to one of the specialty services as well as the availability to an ICU with continuous observation and care.
Veterinary Technician 1
- 30% Assist with a variety of technical clinical procedures associated with triage and the emergent presentation of small animals to the VTH. Assist with life support techniques and a variety of procedures and equipment. Assist with restaint. administering medications, placement of intravenous catheters, perform venipuncture, cyctocentesis, abdominal/thoracic taps, etc.
- 20% Assist in the admitting, assessment and emergency stabilization of patients presenting to the emergency service. Maintain a log of emergency calls received and provide first aid instruction and general information over the phone. Maintain a daily census of all patients seen assist with estimates, entering charges and other data entry.
- 20% Assist and participates in utilizing and maintenance of sophisticated small animal diagnostic equipment to include but not limited to: oxygen cage, ECG, fluid pumps, and bedside blood analyzers.
- 10% Assist with documentation in the medical record of all information, procedures, therapies. Assist in completing requests, prescriptions, client communication, etc.
- 10% Assist with general instruction to 3rd and 4th year veterinary students, veterinary interns, technician interns by tutorial and example, the techniques and protocols appropriate for treating the emergent small animal to include assessment, monitoring, and recording information.
- 10% Be a part of maintaining the blood bank. Holiday coverage for the emergency service as well as acting as essential personnel in the event of activation during of the hospital as an emergency response facility. Other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor's Degree OR Associate’s degree in veterinary technology OR CVT or equivalent OR 3 years of experience in a working environment with similar duties
VETERINARY TECHNICIAN 2

VETERINARY TECHNICIAN 3
- 30% Perform and teach a variety of technical clinical procedures associated with triage and the emergent presentation of small animals to the VTH. Perform and teach life support techniques and a variety of procedures and equipment. Perform and teach safe and adequate restaint. administering medications, placement of intravenous catheters, perform venipuncture, cyctocentesis, abdominal/thoracic taps, etc.
- 20% Operate proficiently and instruct others to maintain small animal diagnostic equipment to include but not limited to: oxygen cage, ECG, fluid pumps, and bedside blood analyzers.
- 20% Perform and instruct/teach the functions of admitting, assessment and emergency stabilization of patients presenting to the emergency service. Bachelor's Degree with 4 years of applicable experience OR Associate’s degree in veterinary technology with 4 years experience OR Certification as a vet tech or equivalent with 4 years experience OR 7 Years of experience in a working environment with similar duties.
Special or Physical Qualifications (ALL LEVELS):
May be Required to work a variety of shifts including nights, weekends, and holidays.
Per PS 18- This position is a part of the Emergency Response Personnel - these personnel are linked with the hospital during any emergency response event and are expected to report in and perform as outlined in the emergency response plan.
Required to be capable of lifting more than 50 pounds, standing or walking for prolonged periods, able to reach above and below the shoulder, vision (near sight), vision (far sight), kneel or sit on the floor, push/pulling, grasping, climbing, crawling bending, squatting, and/or twisting.
