Job description

Note: APA operates on a 37.5-hour work week with one hour lunch breaks each day. APA sets salaries based on several considerations, including years of relevant experience, level of education, and previous staff and/or governance experience at APA.

The Books Production Specialist serves as a team leader for the implementation of editorial quality, functionality, and distribution of digital/electronic book products for AP Imprints within APA Books. The incumbent provides program level support to the Director of Book and Journal Production, for the production workflow. The Books Production Specialist is responsible for coordinating all aspects of production related to the digital/electronic deliverables for all AP Imprints within APA Books. The incumbent also works as a liaison between other Book Directors within and outside AP Imprints to coordinate vital information from APA Books Production.


Education and Experience Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Psychology, Communications, Publishing, English, or Business
  • 3-4 years of experience within scholarly publications that includes a working knowledge of composition, print/online production processes, print bidding, schedule and deadline management and customer service
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication (written and verbal) skills with scholarly authors, scientific editors, and vendors (composition, print, and online).

Computer Skills Required (including level of expertise):

  • Adobe Acrobat (User)
  • Databases (Proficiency in use of online production systems and databases)


Responsibilities:

  • Manages the workflow of manuscripts through the Books Production Department by assigning projects for printer selection and digital product distribution.
  • Manages the forecasting of yearly production schedules in collaboration with the Director of Development, Director of Acquisitions, and Director of Book and Journal Production.
  • Oversees the quality of products by reviewing and making corrections to book proofs in early production stages to reduce late-stage correction costs and delays.
  • Manages the editorial quality, functionality, and distribution of digital/electronic book products.
  • Manages the books printer selection process by obtaining printer bids, forecasting schedules, and ensuring books are printed and delivered to the warehouse in a timely manner to make publication dates.
  • Prepares and maintains status reports for Books Department Directors, Business & Planning, Marketing, and Sales on print status, print bidding, and digital review processes.
  • Manages the books reprinting process including scheduling, production, printing, and warehouse delivery.
  • Responsible for the dissemination of all Books Department complimentary copies of works to authors, editors, contributors, and others involved with each title.
  • Communicates regularly with authors/editors, contributors, etc. to ensure timely delivery and customer satisfaction.
  • Communicates daily with Director of Book and Journal Production, Production Editors, and Technical Editing Supervisor to ensure that production schedules and associated deadlines are met.
  • Leads the Production team in creating workflow efficiencies and strategically improving the Books Production process.
  • Other duties as assigned.
