Position Title: Project Controller
Position Location: Remote - work virtually from anywhere in the United States

JOB SUMMARY
The Project Controller will play a vital role in overseeing the financial health of our projects and will work closely with project managers to provide financial insights and support decision-making while ensuring projects stays on track with regards to budgets and timelines.


The Project Controller will manage and guide our team of project accountants, optimizing the billing process & project administration tasks throughout the project lifecycle.  This person will also take a lead role in the development of reports & implementation of tools related to project control & project performance, as well as identify areas of improvement for project operations.


The Project Controller will be self-directed on day-to-day work and receives high level instruction on new projects, tasks or assignments. Will execute and lead teams and projects, tasks or assignments of complex scope.  May coordinate activities of other personnel.


The Project Controller will communicate and operate in line with organizational goals and values, as well as departmental objectives.


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Project Accounting (40%)

  • Assist project accountants as needed with billing or updates to ERP system for contracts, fee schedules, or other project information

  • Manage and mentor project accountants, setting objectives and reviewing performance

  • Oversee the financial aspects of engineering projects, ensuring accurate budgeting, forecasting, and analysis

  • Participate in the development of financial strategies and contribute to long-term business planning

  • Monitor receivables and assist with collections

  • Manage and oversee the billing process ensuring accuracy and efficiency

  • Audit project cash flow and liaise with project managers on project performance
Financial Reporting & Analysis (40%)

  • Leverage experience with SQL, Power BI, and other reporting platforms to generate accurate and insightful project performance reports and dashboards, including KPI’s, budgets, and forecasts

  • Use advanced knowledge of Excel and other analytical tools to conduct in-depth analysis to provide financial insights and support strategic decision-making

  • Prepare and present project financial information to stakeholders in a clear and understandable manner by evaluating, analyzing, and reporting appropriate data points
Process Improvement & System Implementation (20%)

  • Improve efficiency by revamping existing processes and developing new ones, implementing appropriate control systems

  • Play a leading role in ERP system upgrades and / or implementations ensuring seamless integration and compliance

  • Work closely with the IT and other relevant departments to optimize the use of technology in all job functions
COMPLETION OF ASSIGNED TASKS AND DELIVERABLES ON TIME AND ON BUDGET

Performs other related duties as assigned

Requirements
POSITION REQUIREMENTS (INTERMEDIATE LEVEL FOR ALL THE FOLLOWING)
  • A full understanding of project accounting, billing projections and contract administration
  • Proficient in relational database management, particularly Microsoft SQL Server and T-SQL
  • A strong understanding of project management systems & tools for project control
  • Skilled using MS Office Suite (Excel, Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, Teams)
  • Ability to work successfully in a remote environment thru effective communication and organizational skills, self-motivation, proactiveness and resourcefulness in a distraction free workspace
  • Ability to communicate verbally and in writing technical and non-technical information
  • Ability to identify problems, evaluate alternatives and implement effective solutions
  • Ability to accurately prepare, update and maintain records, files and reports
  • Ability to work under pressure and meet close deadlines
  • Ability to effectively plan and delegate the work of others
  • Organizational skills, with the ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously

TRAVEL / RELOCATION REQUIREMENTS
  • Up to 5%, this may include travel to any or all 50 US states
  • Travel is defined as physically leaving home on behalf of business activities including but not limited to client sites, meetings with other employees, meeting for business development purposes, running errands on behalf of the business, attending industry conferences, etc.

EDUCATION / EXPERIENCE
  • Bachelor’s degree in finance, accounting or related field​
PLUS
  • Minimum of eight years of experience as a project accountant or similar and experience with accounting software (ERP / billing software experience with VantagePoint a plus)​
