Scion Executive Search (SES) has been retained to conduct the search for the incoming Controller of Student Achievement Partners (SAP), a nonprofit educational services organization that designs and shares evidence-based literacy and mathematics resources that center historically underserved students. The Controller will actively contribute to organizational learning, as well as towards SAPs notable goal of becoming an anti-racist and multicultural organization. Reporting directly to the Chief Financial and Administrative Officer (CFAO), this full-time, remote opportunity is available for immediate hire! **

POSITION OVERVIEW:**

Reporting to and working alongside the CFAO, the Controller will be key in collaborating with the entire SAP team to manage the annual budget and forecasting process. Supervising the Accounting Manager, the Controller will manage the monthly close and annual audit, provide detailed analysis and reporting to project teams, senior directors, and funders, contributing to strategic financial decision-making. SAP has engaged a Professional Employer Organization (PEO) to handle the organization's payroll and benefits, and the Controller will also be responsible for overseeing the management of the PEO. **

RESPONSIBILITIES:**

  • Manage the monthly finalization of financial books and records, emphasizing meticulous attention to detail, operational efficiency and adherence to internal controls.
  • Administer internal and external financial reporting processes, ensuring accuracy, compliance, and timeliness in accordance with regulatory standards and organizational guidelines.
  • Leverage software systems and streamline processes to optimize the finance department, providing training and guidance to the team as necessary.
  • Examine internal processes and procedures to ensure proper internal controls and process efficiency.
  • Ensure the comprehensive and precise completion of the IRS Form 990 return.
  • In conjunction with the Accounting Manager, direct the annual audit, including the comprehensive preparation of all supporting schedules.
  • Review the monthly and annual reconciliation of balance sheet accounts completed by the Accounting Manager. Perform bank reconciliations assuring there is segregation of duties.
  • Analyze monthly accrual entries, grant allocations in accordance with grant agreements, and cash forecasting.
  • Direct grant accounting processes, including the creation of release entries.
  • Orchestrate the budgeting and forecasting process, employing strategic efforts to optimize budget management procedures.
  • Manage the PEO relationship to ensure this company is performing maintenance functions as needed and processing payroll in a timely manner.
  • Administer the consultant contracting processes within Agiloft and provide training to staff to ensure the software is fully leveraged.
  • Perform Revenue recognition for all earned revenue streams.
  • Manage Permissions contracts and renewals for third party permissioned items included in our resources.
  • Complete all transactions with a high level of fidelity, thereby ensuring the integrity and precision of financial processes.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A sincere passion and deep appreciation for the mission of Student Achievement Partners.
  • 5+ years of education-related nonprofit accounting and finance leadershipexpertise.
  • Bachelors degree in Accounting and Finance, Business Administration, or related field.
  • Mastery of nonprofit financial systems and nonprofit accounting.
  • Extensive experience supporting a complex operating budget of $5M+ comprised of diverse sources, including grants.
  • Proven experience in formulating budgets, producing detailed reports, managing projects, grants, and contracts, and implementing effective internal controls.
  • Exemplary attention to detail and a commitment to excellence as well as superb communication and presentation abilities.
  • Willingness to be hands-on and support other members of the team.
  • Must enjoy streamlining processes and leveraging systems in service of departmental optimization.
  • Advanced proficiency in MS Office, including Excel.
  • Proficiency in SaaS, particularly expertise in NetSuite is preferred.
  • Expertise in managing audits and collaborating with external auditors.
  • Must thrive working remotely in a virtual organization.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate, engage, and build relationships with people from a wide variety of backgrounds and cultures.
  • Proven experience managing and communicating with vendors; experience working with PEOs is beneficial.
  • Legal acumen and deep understanding of regulatory frameworks, contract language, and compliance requirements.

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS:

In addition to a fully remote work environment and a competitive base salary of $110,000 to $150,000, this organization offers a comprehensive benefits package!
