Job description

Location: 100% remote work-from-home position (You must permanently live and have the right to work in New Zealand to apply for this position)

Pay: NZ $25 per hour

Hours: 37.5 hours a week Monday-Friday

Contract: 6-month contract with an extension highly likely. Self-employed contractor. Responsible for own taxes. No benefits.

We are looking for an illustrator of a Māori background, who is confident in their ability to create traditional and contemporary styles of art, to join our New Zealand team. You will be responsible for creating the images used on Twinkl’s resources and will need to be able to adapt to fit with the current artwork style of the company’s brand. It is essential for you to have a knowledge and understanding of Aotearoa New Zealand and Māori culture and design. We are looking for someone who is creative and passionate about illustration and who can work quickly and independently to create fun and child-friendly images.

Joining us, you’ll be working with a capable team of writers, editors and designers to create a huge variety of learning resources used by educators in New Zealand. You’ll be creating illustrations to engage students and contributing to Twinkl’s mission to ‘Help those who teach’.

How you’ll spend your week:

  • Creating illustrations across different curriculum levels including culturally relevant and New Zealand-specific illustrations.
  • Skillshare workshops and other related training activities.
  • Weekly team and line manager meetings.

Requirements

To succeed in the role, you will:

  • Have the ability to draw to reflect Twinkl’s age-specific branding style.
  • Bring your creativity and imagination.
  • Be proficient in the use of Adobe Photoshop.
  • Have the ability to research and synthesise information relevant to an illustration request.
  • Have strong draughtsmanship skills.
  • Be confident in creating both culturally relevant and New Zealand-specific illustrations.
  • Work collaboratively with other team members.
  • Be a self-motivated individual able to work remotely with team members based in New Zealand and overseas.

You’ll work with:

  • An in house illustration team with over 100 illustrators.
  • The New Zealand product team of writers, editors and designers.

We're interested in anyone who meets one, or a combination of the following:

  • Relevant experience in illustration/other art and design-based subjects
  • Experience in educational illustration.
  • Experience in illustrating for children. Please apply using your CV and a covering letter that contains a link to your online portfolio.

In portfolios, we are looking for candidates with a variety of illustration styles that really showcase basic drawing skills. In particular, we want to see strong examples of line drawing and a good understanding of how to draw people and proportion/anatomy. We also need evidence of flexibility and adaptability to demonstrate that candidates would be capable of adopting the Twinkl brand styles which can be seen on the website.

Equipment Checklist:

Twinkl will provide:

What you will need to provide:

  • Reliable internet connection.

  • Webcam and headphones including microphone.
  • Graphics tablet (no iPads)

Computer or laptop, minimum spec to allow all necessary programs and systems to run optimally:

  • Processor Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-6700.
  • 16Gb RAM.
  • 256GB SSD Hard drive.

Drawing tablet:

  • You will need a graphics tablet with or without a screen.
  • iPads and iPad pros are not suitable due to our workflow.

When working it is essential that you have:

  • Good working environment free from distractions.
  • Boundaries in place to separate work from home life.

Nice to have but not essential:

  • Due to the detail of the illustrations we create, it can be beneficial to have a second screen.
