Job description

Working/Functional Title

Data Gov. Resource Administrator

Position Summary

The Institutional Research (IR) department at Michigan State University (MSU) is in search of a Data Governance Resource Administrator to bolster their team of data enthusiasts. This role is pivotal in promoting data-informed decision-making throughout the university community while valuing and encouraging diversity and inclusion. IR seeks candidates with experience with data governance tools, institutional research, and bringing individuals from across campus together for a common purpose.

The Primary Responsibilities Of The Role Include

  • Developing and maintaining the university's Data Governance framework for centrally held data systems.
  • Facilitating cross-functional communication regarding MSU's data usage, developing and implementing data policies and procedures, and coordinating the university's data governance processes.
  • Lead the Data Governance Working Group, assisting units with data governance projects.
  • Ensuring transparency in data management processes.
  • Developing and providing literacy training and increasing data understanding for the campus community.

Job Duties

Specific job duties include, but not limited to, developing, documenting, communicating, and educating the MSU community on data governance processes, guidelines, and established standards. For example:

  • Oversee the Data Governance Working Group, coordinating project timelines and outcomes, program communications, and membership updates.
  • Review and recommend potential data policies, terms and definitions for campus use.
  • Coordinates communications and documentation to enable the transparency of the processes that create, enhance, maintain and govern the use of MSU data.
  • In coordination with IT Services, develops policies around data storage, usage, and data sharing agreements.

Coordinates efforts for literacy training and consulting services that enable individuals and units to access University data and that support Data Governance framework and related initiatives.

Unit Specific Education/Experience/Skills

Knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing one or two years of post-bachelor degree work, such as a Master’s degree in Computer Science, Data Analytics, Data Management, or a related field; five to eight years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in data management, stewardship and governance, business analytics, and report development; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Doctoral degree
  • At least 5 years experience in data governance
  • Working knowledge of concepts, practices and procedures and ability to use in varied situations.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of theories, concepts and practices and ability to use in complex, difficult and/or unprecedented situations.
