The Program


The overall objective of IFC Global Pharma Resource Efficiency (REF) project is to support existing and priority target IFC clients in the pharmaceutical sector globally to increase efficiency and productivity which would lead to reduced costs, while responding to climate change by decarbonizing and reducing their greenhouse gas (GHG) and water footprint.


Scope of Work


IFC is seeking to hire a consultant – resource efficiency decarbonization specialist with experience in pharmaceuticals manufacturing with engineering background to (i) support the team in select client engagements, on as needed basis; (ii) provide input and participate on knowledge sharing activities and events as required. The specialist shall have a senior experience in working with Tier1 and 2 pharmaceuticals manufacturing clients, working with clients, consultants, delivering in-depth knowledge of best industrial practices. He/she will report to the Technical/Task Leads.


The expected Consultant’s input includes including analysis client data; if required, site visit(s) to ensure quality of data collection and to identify improvement opportunities; supervision over the quality of data collection and analysis provided by other consultants and/or by the external consultancy firm; peer reviewing back-to-office report, diagnostic and in-depth assessment reports, investment plans, and other deliverables prepared; participating in meetings and calls with the client and the project implementation team on as needed basis;


  • Lead technical delivery of Pharma diagnostic work with clients including data collection, consistency checks, and drafting individual client reports.
  • Lead the technical delivery of selected in-depth client engagement including collecting and processing client data offline and onsite, drafting documents, costs calculation files, working with other consultants to guide action plans and technical recommendations on best options for the clients; supervise technical teams and ensure quality control of all technical deliverables in partnership with the project management team; participate in selection and work with international consultants;
  • Perform desk research of specific sector items, relevant for resource efficiency (including energy, water, waste treatment in both sterile and non-sterile environments);
  • Provide inputs and contribute to the development and piloting tools;


Client work includes among other tasks:


  • Performing clients’ data processing and benchmarking analysis;
  • Preparing documents/data/questionnaires for REF diagnostics and in-depth assessments;
  • Providing comments on other consultant’s reports;
  • Preparing various presentation files (final client presentation, pitch documents, client cases and other outreach materials);
  • Providing advice on specific REF related saving opportunities; considering renewable energy opportunities, constrains and benefits while preparing client’s report;
  • Providing technical specifications, likely duration, CAPEX and OPEX estimates for proposed improvement measures, ROE; along with indication of key risks that may influence implementation of recommendations.
  • Providing input in business development activities, including drafting and peer-reviewing business development materials, such as pitch presentations and advisory services proposals tailored to the specific client’s needs, and participating in meetings with potential clients.
  • If required, providing input in the Program’s outreach and capacity building activities related to pharma manufacturing productivity and material and equipment efficiency enhancements, including reviewing of relevant reports, case study publications, developing and presenting necessary materials for outreach events, and participating in select events, etc.
  • Performing other related activities, in accordance with actual business need.


The Specialist will work with clients virtually and face-to-face either during dedicated site visits or participating in site visits organized by broader REF team or other IFC teams. The Specialist is also expected to support back-office processing of all aspects of the client related work.


He/she is expected to be based in the LAC region and have Spanish and/ or Portuguese capabilities. He/she will cooperate with other IFC specialists and technical experts, and report to Task Leads. Specialist is expected to be ready to travel.


Deliverables


The Consultant is expected to deliver the following outputs:


  • Draft Pharma Diagnostic reports for individual plants and clients;
  • Processed questionnaires including:

- Review and validation of provided data;

- Analysis of benchmarking results;

- Estimating technical and basic financial parameters of specific technical measures considered;

- Graphs and visualization of results;

  • Technical review and checks of deliverables by other consultants;
  • Technical inputs and recommendations for the diagnostics methodology and tool;
  • Back-to-office reports (BTORs) from site visit(s) to the facilities of the clients.
  • Contribution to data collection and analysis through review of data completeness and correctness.
  • Recommendations/additions/comments to the draft back-to-office reports, diagnostic and in-depth assessment reports, investment plan and other deliverables envisaged under the engagement with clients delivered by external consultants.
  • Recommendations/contributions to a draft of the pitch presentation (a stack of ppt slides to demonstrate business case that could be used for preparation of a tailored pitch presentation of services for specific clients).
  • Recommendations/contributions to a draft of the advisory services proposal on productivity (a Word document describing proposed service – scope of work, deliverables, and timeline).


Minimum quality requirements for deliverables to be accepted by IFC


  • The deliverables must be submitted in time, according to agreed deadlines.
  • Each deliverable shall be submitted to IFC and approved by IFC.
  • Reports shall be initially written in English, in clear and concise language. Executive summary must focus on key conclusions and recommendations. The final reports may need to be delivered to clients in Spanish.
  • Deliverables must be precise, technically correct, and free of grammatical and mistyping errors.
  • Benchmark sources must be reliable and indicated in the reports.
  • All deliverables shall be submitted in editable electronic versions. Electronic files shall be editable and readable without restrictions.
  • Auxiliary files (e.g. Excel macro files, original Excel graphs and respective tables, etc.) should be submitted to IFC.


Selection Criteria


  • The Consultant should be an experienced individual consultant (with at least 12 years of relevant experience) with proven solid technical background in pharmaceutical manufacturing and delivering consulting services.
  • Master or equivalent professional degree in engineering and/or manufacturing management and similar.
  • Advanced use of excel, word, and engineering tools; strong background in developing material and energy balances for complex real systems/plant using real data
  • Experience in leading client work and working with large corporate clients;
  • Track record in implementing REF and decarbonization methodologies, audits and investments; experience in process efficiency improvements and/or consultancy assignments;
  • Understanding of renewables; environmental aspects of industries, regulations, and compliance issues in the region
  • Strong analytical skills, ability to think strategically and rapidly analyze diverse information.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely for expert and non-expert audiences.
  • Results-oriented approach with demonstrated history of accomplishments.
  • Fluency in English and Spanish required, Portuguese would be an advantage.
