Manager, Research Engineering

Are you excited about working at the forefront of applied research in an industry setting? Thomson Reuters Labs is seeking a hands-on engineering manager to guide the delivery of cutting-edge AI solutions from concept to production.

What does Thomson Reuters Labs do? We experiment, we build, we deliver. We support the organization and our customers through applied research in informational retrieval and natural language processing. We work closely with product and domain experts to identify compelling solutions at the intersection of user need and technical feasibility. Our team is responsible for designing the next generation of tax, accounting and audit compliance software for Tax Professionals and Corporates in the US, and across the global markets. We own AI innovation for Thomson Reuters’ core tax products, including UltraTax, Cloud Audit Suit, SurePrep and ONESOURCE. We work with the latest LLM prompting and agentic AI approaches to build cutting edge products.

As Manager of Research Engineering, you are both a technical leader and a people manager. Key responsibilities include the tech stack and system design of new AI capabilities, technical direction of production services, close partnership with technology partners across the enterprise, and responsibility for the recruiting, career growth and mentorship of Labs engineers. Managers provide technical guidance on medium, yet complex projects in close collaboration with the research arm of Labs. This role also identifies and collaboratively advocates for the adoption of industry best practices around well-managed software delivery.

In this opportunity as Manager, Research Engineering you will:

About You:

You're a fit for the role of Manager, Research Engineering if your background includes:

  • A bachelor's degree in information technology, computer science, or the equivalent. Master’s or PhD in a relevant specialization preferred.
  • Minimum of 7 years' software development experience, with the demonstrated ability to successfully manage software development teams in an agile environment
  • Experience spearheading technical development in a cross-functional setting, with responsibility for AI/ML applications; close partnership with Applied Scientists, R&D groups, Product teams or similar.
  • A portfolio showcasing significant contributions to technology innovation
  • Excellent project management, organization and communication skills
  • Experience contributing to and overseeing large-scale rollouts and infrastructure initiatives.
  • Expertise in several of the following areas: robust python development, MLOps, containerization, cloud infrastructure (AWS and Azure), advanced search and recommendation technology, orchestration of ML pipelines for real-time inference, microservices architecture, model monitoring and governance.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide guidance, direction and lead other Research Engineers.

Thomson Reuters complies with local laws that require upfront disclosure of the expected pay range for a position. The base compensation range varies across locations. Eligible office location(s) for this role include one or more of the following: New York City, San Francisco, Los Angeles, and/or Irvine, CA; McLean, VA; Washington, DC. The base compensation range for the role in any of those locations is $151,700 - $281,700. Chicago, IL; Frisco, TX; Houston, TX; fully remote location. For these locations and any eligible US locations not otherwise noted, including for fully remote location if applicable, the base compensation range for this role is $137,900 - $256,100. This role may also be eligible for an Annual Bonus based on a combination of enterprise and individual performance. Base pay is positioned within the range based on several factors including an individual’s knowledge, skills and experience with consideration given to internal equity. Base pay is one part of a comprehensive Total Reward program which also includes flexible and supportive benefits and other wellbeing programs.
