What You’ll Be Doing
As a Director, you are a key member of the senior management team within the Leveraged Finance Group, responsible for the development and implementation of the Group's strategies and systems relating to portfolio growth and risk management. You will have to possess superior analytical skills, the ability to work efficiently and effectively in a fast paced team environment along with a continual and proactive development of relationship building skills. In addition, you will also provide mentoring to the junior team members.

How You’ll Succeed
CIBC Leveraged Finance consists of a team of professionals and support staff with expertise in senior and subordinated cash-flow lending to Canadian middle-market businesses. Established in 2006, the team has a three-pronged mandate: i) providing national coverage of private equity sponsors; ii) concluding highly-structured, event-based transactions, often alongside CIBC Commercial Banking Relationship Managers; and iii) delivering mezzanine debt solutions to our clients nationally. Our objective is to be the best in the leveraged finance industry. Our focus is on providing our clients creative financing solutions, value-added ideas and industry leading quality service, by delivering the full suite of CIBC’s product offerings to clients.
- Client First- You will lead discussions with Private Equity firms to deliver specialized leveraged finance products such as mezzanine financing, acquisition financing, and other structured financings based on a firm's enterprise value. Lead or participate in discussions with client management teams (executive, financial and operational) in order to assess financing needs.
- Relationship Building – Develop strong relationships with internal contacts, external customers, along with contacts within the general industry in order to generate new business referrals and opportunities. Lead and coordinate broader team coverage of existing private equity sponsor relationships and establish new relationships to generate new business referrals and opportunities.
- Collaboration - In partnership with other Leveraged Finance team members and/or Commercial Banking Relationship Managers, lead financing proposals including security, covenants and pricing to properly reflect and compensate CIBC for the assessed risk. Provide mentoring to more junior deal team members. Demonstrate a long term commitment to learning and continuous improvement and help reinforce a high performance and team oriented culture.
- Due Diligence – Lead and coordinate comprehensive financial/non-financial due diligence analysis and risk assessment of credit proposals. Prepare and negotiate security documentation for all transactions. Negotiate the terms and conditions with both clients and internal CIBC stakeholders.
- Portfolio Management – Provide senior level support for a portfolio of ~20 senior and subordinated debt accounts. Monitor account performance and industry trends. Maintain a proactive approach to continuous risk assessment.
Who You Are
- Education you've Completed. BBA or MBA. Other financial designations considered an asset (i.e. CPA, CBV, CFA etc.).
- Experiences you bring. You have 8+ years of professional experience in a commercial credit and/or equity investment environment. You have experience with lending policies, procedures and practices, asset-security valuation, loan interviewing, loan assessment, industry and competitive analysis and investigation. You have strong financial modeling, research and negotiation skills.
- You have strong business acumen. You have extensive knowledge of leveraged finance (i.e., capital structures, capital markets, public and private debt and equity markets). Extensive knowledge of specialized leveraged finance products (i.e., structured/acquisition financings, project financings, loan syndication) and other core CIBC products and services. Extensive knowledge of business, legal, tax, banking and regulatory framework affecting financial requirements of customers.
- You have strong presentation skills. You have strong written and verbal communication skills to present financial information to clients.
- You’re able to structure and package leveraged finance products. You are strong at structuring complex transactions that meet the needs of complex and high value clients that are within CIBC’s risk tolerances. You understand the implications of various financing options while providing financial advice in the areas of balance sheet structure, financing alternatives, and loan syndication. You can use credit and strong interpersonal skills when leading intensive due diligence along with risk identification and mitigation. You are able to apply expert knowledge of a complex and diverse marketplace and industry to meet the needs of sophisticated clientele.
