As we continue to develop innovative medicines, we are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Senior Director to serve as a Medical Affairs franchise lead overseeing a rare disease program.
The Senior Director, Global Medical Affairs Franchise Lead will be responsible for developing and executing the strategic vision for an emerging asset focused on rare genetic metabolic disorders. This key role will report to the Executive Director, Global Medical Strategy TA lead. This leadership role will involve collaborating with cross-functional teams, key opinion leaders (KOLs), and other stakeholders to ensure the successful implementation of asset level medical affairs strategies/plans, ultimately driving the development and commercialization of treatments in the assigned therapeutic area. This position is a cornerstone hire in a new disease area for Otsuka so global experience launching rare disease assets and building/developing teams is an asset.
Key Responsibilities:
Strategic Leadership:
- Aligned to the overall therapeutic area strategy, the incumbent will develop and drive the medical strategic vision for assigned assets.
- Represent Medical Affairs at both US and Global governance meetings as necessary.
- Develop and execute medical strategic and tactical plans informed by unmet needs and medical value proposition.
- Responsible for contributing to the development of TRPPs (target reimbursable product profiles) for assigned assets.
Franchise Management:
- Lead and manage subset of team members working on the assigned assets within the broader TA providing guidance, mentorship, and fostering a collaborative and innovative work environment.
- Ensure appropriate resourcing across assigned programs and act as escalation point for staff members related to assigned asset strategy and resource allocation.
- Oversee execution of Medical Affairs asset plans including pre- and post-launch activities in close collaboration with Field Medical Affairs, Medical Communications/Publication Strategy and cross-functional stakeholders including KPI assessment of Medical Affairs impact.
- Lead Medical Affairs lifecycle management initiatives and evidence generation planning for assigned assets.
- Curate and communicate medical insights to inform strategic plans and clinical development programs .
- Serve as medical reviewer and escalation point for promotional review and medical review of externally-facing materials.
Stakeholder engagement:
- Develop and execute external engagement plans focused on key medical stakeholders for assigned disease states.
- Serve as a company representative and scientific voice in meetings with professional societies, advocacy groups, payers/HTAs and other external engagements
- Collaborate closely with other key functions, including regional medical leads, clinical development, global value and real-world evidence, US and global commercial teams, market access, and regulatory affairs, to ensure integrated global strategies and cohesive medical affairs strategies .
Scientific and Medical Affairs Expertise:
- Serve as an expert in healthcare landscape for assigned therapy areas and relevant geographies. Knowledge and experience with the US healthcare system and regulatory landscape is required for this role, with global healthcare experience being an asset.
- Stay abreast of the latest advancements, research, and publications within assigned disease areas
- Act as a subject matter expert, providing medical and scientific insights to internal teams and external stakeholders.
- Follow evolutions in Medical Affairs trends and support innovation within the department to best address the needs of key stakeholders
Requirements:
- Medical Doctor (MD), PhD or PharmD candidates with significant industry, research and/or clinical experience in rare/ultra-rare disease. Candidates without terminal doctoral degrees may be considered with exceptional experience in rare genetic and/or metabolic disorders.
- Must have demonstrated track record of success driving Medical Affairs strategy in the pre- and post-launch settings.
- Experience in both U.S. and Global Medical Affairs roles strongly preferred.
- Demonstrated experience in life cycle management and evidence generation strategy preferred
- Must have knowledge of US laws and regulations applicable to Medical Affairs activities.
- Minimum of 10+ years of relevant experience in the pharmaceutical industry, with at least 3 years of leadership experience in medical affairs strategy or related roles.
- Demonstrated success in leading and developing high-performing teams preferred.
- Strong strategic mindset with the ability to translate insights into actionable plans.
- Excellent communication and presentation skills, with the ability to interact effectively with internal and external stakeholders, including KOLs.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced, dynamic environment, with a proactive and problem-solving mindset.

Minimum $225,490.00 - Maximum $337,180.00, plus incentive opportunity: The range shown represents a typical pay range or starting salary for candidates hired to perform the work. Other elements may be used to determine actual salary such as the candidate’s job experience, specific skills, and comparison to internal incumbents currently in role.
