Operations Manager, Corporate Development

Location: Remote or Hybrid; Greater Toronto area


Empire Life is looking to hire a Corporate Development Operations Manager to join our Corporate Development Operations team! The Operations Manager, Corporate Development supports the business unit, subsidiaries and minority investments through the development and implementation of an operational framework that includes operational oversight and processes to ensure an optimal operating model across the Empire ecosystem. The incumbent is guided by defined goals and objectives and works under the general supervision of the VP, Corporate Development Operations.

What you’ll be working on

  • Provide oversight, guidance and support to the various subsidiaries and  investment associates to assist them in running an efficient and profitable operation. 

  • Collaborate with operational management subsidiaries to Empire Life to find solutions and develop processes when gaps are identified.

  • Act as point person for subsidiaries and minority investments operational management teams to connect them with the right people at Empire and facilitate discussions to ensure issue resolution.

  • Participate in the acquisition process for due diligence (contract review, license validation, compliance) and for integration (development of integration plan and operational implementation). 

  • Provide operational oversight and lead the implementation of practical solutions as Business Unit Compliance Officer (BUCO) for Corporate Development, including continually assessing industry and regulatory environment for impact on the business unit, completing compliance certifications, business continuity plan management and responding to business unit audit requests.

  • Conduct risk management assessments such as third party risk, model risk, privacy impact risk, and AML/ATF risks for Corporate Development, provide solutions and manage implementation of any requirements needed.

  • Provide support to the operation management of subsidiaries and investment associates to assist them in ensuring they are compliant with Empire Life operational policies and regulatory and industry requirements.

  • Lead the development, implementation and maintenance of operational policies and procedures for Corporate Development and, where necessary, subsidiaries and investment associates. 

  • Create resources, tools and templates to standardize the execution of operational policies and procedures for Corporate Development and across the Empire ecosystem.

  • As the team develops, manage and coach team members who report to the Manager; set employee goals and objectives and manage performance

  • Additional related duties as may be assigned

What we’re looking for you to have
  •  Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience in an insurance administration and/or compliance with 3-5 years experience in a leadership role.

  • Strong understanding of the Canadian financial services distribution environment, including how MGAs, advisors and insurance companies function together.

  • Understanding of the Canadian insurance regulatory and industry environment, from both the insurance company and distributor perspective.

  • Strong ability to take initiative and drive projects forward

  • Attention to detail and high level of organization. 

  • Ability to multitask. 

  • Strong fluency with Microsoft Office tools, ability to learn new tools.

  • Strong interpersonal and well developed customer relations skills.

  • Strong and effective communication, including interacting with management and clients at both Empire and subsidiary levels. with strength in influencing, leading and driving discussions.
