The Canal & River Trust is one of the UK’s largest charities. We maintain 2,000 miles of historic canals, rivers, docks and reservoirs, along with museums, archives and the country’s third largest collection of protected historic buildings – preserving them for future generations. Our waterways are exciting, vibrant places to work.
There are hundreds of examples of mechanically and electrically operated pumps, bridges and locks on our waterways and we’ve combined modern technology with our historic structures to make them last longer. These include pumps for movement of water, hydraulic systems for bridge/lock operation and mechanical/electrical actuators for operation of sluices, bridges and locks.
As a Mechanical & Electrical Technician in our region you will play an important role using your technical expertise to deliver the maintenance and repair works to M&E structures on the Gloucester/Sharpness canal, River Severn, Monmouth/Brecon canal and Kennet & Avon canal to protect and enhance the reputation of the network as a valued national asset and the provision of customer service.
Our Gloucester and South West maintenance team require a suitably qualified M&E Technician to assist with maintenance activities to electrical and mechanical assets - specifically electrical and hydraulic systems. As a Health and Safety driven team, we need someone capable of isolating incoming power supply/control panels, performing fault finding within the 400v/230v/24v systems, and fixing any potential issues. Many of our M&E Technicians lone work, therefore, we need someone with the appropriate qualifications to perform such work legally. An ideal applicant will have skills linked to:
- C&G2391/2 or equivalent for testing and inspection of electrical installation.
- C&G BS7671 18th edition.
In house hydraulic training will be provided with progression onto CETOP stage 1 hydraulic training course. See how we are using technology to manage our waterways here: https://canalrivertrust.org.uk/specialist-teams/managing-our-water/using-technology-to-manage-our-waterways
Location & coverage
Reporting to the base in Gloucester or Sharpness this role will involve regular travel along the regional network. Occasionally you may also be required to work in other areas of Wales & Southwest.
Residing near these areas will be essential to accommodate the regular travel along regional canal networks.
Knowledge, Skills/Qualifications & Experience :
This role supports Canal & River Trust’s aims to improve safety and increase the number of people using the inland waterways network. Your skills will be used to maintain our waterways infrastructure.
Ideally you will already be fully conversant with mechanical and electrical isolation methods for safe working and will have the ability to fault find methodically without assistance. The right candidate will be provided with the right training pursuant to his continued development in the role, CTOP®, and will be offered a supportive environment to adapt to our unique work.
If you have any experience of fault finding and then fixing a variety of electrical and / or mechanical assets of varying types and sizes, you may well be right for us. We welcome Technicians with valuable experience, for example if you have worked with water plant, pumps, sewage works, hydraulics, production plant, traffic lights, packaging machines, lifts and escalators, automatic gate systems or heating control systems then this job may be suitable for you.
