Job Description Summary:
The BESS Engineer is responsible for the design and implementation of BESS, ensuring they meet safety standards, operational requirements, and project specifications. The BESS Engineer should have a solid understanding of power systems, BESS equipment, and relevant industry standards.

Position Responsibilities and Duties:
Design/Review electrical BESS, including layout, equipment selection, fire alarm design, network infrastructure and equipment specifications in accordance with project requirements and industry standards.
Perform/Review load flow, short circuit, and grounding, and arc flash studies to ensure the reliability and efficiency of BESS designs.
Develop/Review relay settings and calculations as it pertains to the BESS design.
Prepare/Review detailed engineering drawings, schematics, and technical specifications using AutoCAD electrical,Bluebeam, or Microsoft Office.
Manage/integrate engineering design and deliverables for BESS across disciplines including electrical, structural, civil and fire protection.
Technical support and coordination with Owner or Owner’s representative on regular project coordination calls.
Coordinate with internal and external stakeholders, including utility companies, contractors, OEMs and regulatory agencies to obtain approvals and permits for BESS projects.
Review and evaluate vendor proposals for technical accuracy to specifications for BESS components.
Identify opportunities for design upgrades, improvements, or provide value engineering solutions.
Provide technical support during the construction, testing, and commissioning of new BESS, ensuring compliance with project schedules and quality standards.
Troubleshoot and resolve technical issues related to BESS equipment and systems, both remotely and on-site.
Perform root cause analysis and recommend corrective actions for BESS failures.
Stay informed about emerging technologies and best practices in BESS design, fire systems, and protection systems.
Assist in the development of standards, procedures, and guidelines for BESS engineering activities.
Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including, protection engineering, control systems specialists, PV engineering, and HV engineering to ensure the seamless integration of BESS into the overall power grid.
Participate in safety audits and inspections to identify and mitigate potential hazards in BESS facilities.
Assist with mentoring junior engineers, technicians, and peers providing guidance, training, and lessons learned on BESS design principles and practices.
Maintain accurate documentation and records of BESS designs and modifications.
Participate in team meetings/calls regularly
Demonstrate and maintain a safe work environment and direct safe work practices in energized substations.
Complete other responsibilities as assigned.

Minimum Skills or Experience Requirements
Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering or related field; master's degree preferred.
2+ years in BESS design, construction, or maintenance.
Solid understanding of power systems, including low-voltage, medium-voltage, collection, communications infrastructure and generation.
Familiarity with relevant industry standards and codes, such as NEC, NFPA, IEEE, ANSI, and NESC.
Proficient technical skills in BESS layout, equipment sizing, and fire protection.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to work effectively in a team environment (local and remote).
Detail-oriented with strong problem-solving abilities and a commitment to quality.
Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and prioritize tasks to meet deadlines.
Willingness to pursue licensure is a plus.
