JOB SUMMARY
Serve as one of AOPA’s key advocates in promoting the general aviation interests at the state and local levels. AOPA’s Western Pacific region includes the following states: CA, NV, AZ, and HI. Participate in the development, implementation, and execution of strategies that result in successful advocacy of general aviation pilots and airports, relevant state legislative and/or regulatory issues, development of grass-roots support for AOPA goals and initiatives, and development of AOPA’s membership base. Recruit, provide support for and guidance to AOPA’s Airport Support Network (ASN) Volunteer's within the region.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Lead AOPAs regional efforts to engage with members to promote and protect community airports.
- Recruit and manage communications with Airport Support Network Volunteers within the region. Support local airport support groups and AOPA members engaged in local airport advocacy efforts.
- Analyze and interpret proposed legislation and evaluate potential impact to our members and the GA industry.
- Develop, engage, and maintain relationships with government officials and agencies at the state and local levels to educate them on AOPA perspectives, policies, and programs impacting pilots and aircraft owners.
- Develop and represent AOPA as necessary before state legislatures and local governments. Act as a liaison between the legislative entities and the organization and address any related queries.
- Represent AOPA as necessary before regional and local aviation groups. Develop and maintain relationships with community leaders.
- Engage AOPA members and other pilot or airport support groups in developing and maintaining grass-roots organizations to support general aviation interests.
- Assist in building AOPA membership on a regional level.
- Communicate effectively with your supervisor on opportunities, airport issues, and legislation affecting the region.
- Execute strategies and programs designed to represent the organization favorably and effectively and make positive.

REQUIRED JOB QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor’s degree in aviation, airport management, political science, or related field and/or equivalent experience.
- Private Pilot’s License (PPL)
- Five years of experience working in state and local government, airport management, or aviation advocacy.
- Strong leadership and public speaking skills.
- Ability to travel to state capitols, conferences, aviation events and airports (in general aviation aircraft when appropriate), and on occasion be called upon to work hours that exceed a normal workweek.
- Must reside within the assigned region, in an approved state.

WORKING CONDITIONS:
- This position works in various settings including;
- a home office
- in the air aboard a general aviation aircraft
- outdoors in various weather conditions
- non-climate-controlled hangars
- Typical working hours are 8:30 am – 5 pm, Monday through Friday, with an hour lunch break, however, this position will occasionally require working hours that exceed a normal workweek, to include weekends.
- Exposure to varying altitudes and confined spaces when in a general aviation aircraft.
- This position requires travel, possibly up to 50% of the time within the assigned region, to various general aviation or industry-related events or for other work-related reasons. Travel is by aircraft (general aviation and commercial) and by road or public transit.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
The physical demands of the position are typical of a standard office environment, attending and participating in aviation related events, and operating a general aviation aircraft. While performing the duties of this job, the employee will regularly be required to:
- Sit for extended periods while working at a computer or attending meetings.
- Use hands and fingers to operate a computer keyboard, mouse, and other office equipment.
- Manual dexterity to manipulate conventional controls, ability to step up and bend in preflight inspection, and visual acuity sufficient to identify traffic and other hazards.
- Required to sit; talk and hear, both in person and by telephone; move safely in the airport environment; reach with hands and arms; step up with assistance to access typical general aviation aircraft; see hazards and make visual observations.
- Frequently lift and/or move items weighing up to 25 pounds, such as boxes of materials or equipment.
- Physically push and/or pull a general aviation aircraft to move it out of, and back into, a hangar with or without assistance.
- Routinely stand, walk, and reach with hands and arms during the course of normal office activities.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:
This position is remote. Incumbent must reside in CA, AZ, or OR.
The salary range for this position is: $90,000 - $100,000 depending on education and experience.
