The customer team comprises Sales, Project Management, System Engineering and System Technologist personnel working together in a high performance culture, often with demanding cycle times and high customer expectations because we are working on mission-critical communication systems.
Many of our systems are designed around the APCO Project 25 communications standard. With the growth of data services some of our customer’s mobile wireless networks are being enhanced with LTE infrastructure for applications such as APX Next Smart and live mobile video transmission supplementing our traditional core voice and narrowband data networks.
Job Description
Overview:
The Systems Engineering Group Lead will be responsible for leading a team of Engineers in the public safety design and implementation of solutions for Motorola’s ASTRO 25 systems and adjacent technologies for State and Local government agencies. We are looking for a Group Lead who is inspired by delivering solutions that truly make a difference.
Responsibilities:
The Systems Engineering Group Lead will have multiple roles including team leadership and limited (approx. 20%) direct project responsibilities. In the team leadership role, the Group Lead will support administrative functions, make project assignment decisions, and provide technical oversight to ensure project milestones are met. They will supervise their Systems Engineering field team to ensure systems designs comply with engineering best practices and will work with the project teams comprised of Project Management, Systems Engineers, System Technologists, Construction Managers, and Customer Service Managers to ensure successful project delivery through final system acceptance. The Group Lead will also have limited direct project responsibilities functioning as a Systems Engineer of Record.
Group Lead Team Leadership Responsibilities:
- Systems Engineering administrative functions
- Engineering resource planning, job requisitions, interviewing, hiring decisions, onboarding, training coordination
- Goals setting, performance reviews, merit increase decisions
- Employee rewards and recognition
- Engineering project oversight
- Engineering of Record assignments to each new project
- Project technical oversight and management reporting
- Project milestone reviews and issues resolution
- Sales to Service process execution
- Engineering team leadership
- Initiative development and execution
- Selected Pre-Sales design reviews and labor forecast input
- Interdepartmental coordination between Project Management, Sales, Pre-Sales Engineering, Customer Service Management
Engineer of Record Project Responsibilities:
- Design and implementation of the radio network including infrastructure, subscribers, mobile backhaul and WAN and CEN networks.
- High level of customer and consultant interaction involving customer design reviews, customer witnessed staging and acceptance testing events, coverage acceptance testing, live system upgrades, and troubleshooting efforts.
- System buildout, configuration and acceptance testing in both lab staging and field environments
- Radio coverage testing, frequency analysis and interference mitigation
- Radio system licensing (FCC/Industry Canada/NTIA)
- Preparation of system fleet map, encryption and radio programming templates
- Complete system documentation
- Live system cutovers and upgrades
Engineer of Record Additional Skills/Knowledge:
- Radio Frequency Engineering principles
- Land / Mobile Radio Engineering principles
- RFDS principles to include antenna and cable selection, transmit combiners, receive multi-couplers, and lightning protection systems.
- P25 Land Mobile Radio terminology and two-way subscriber radio provisioning methods.
- Experience with Motorola ASTRO 25 architecture a plus.
- Servers and related systems to include: VMware ESXI, Linux, and Microsoft operating systems.
- Cybersecurity expertise highly desirable
- Construction of remote communication sites to include: site selection, grounding, compound development, tower and shelter requirements.
- Fortinet firewalls, Nokia 7705 series routers, Juniper SRX/MX (Junos) series routers, HP/Aruba switches
- Remote access using SSH, SCP, SFTP, RDP
- Knowledge with point-to-point Microwave systems, Microwave RF & Network design, FCC licensing a plus
- Software applications integration, Application Protocol Interfaces (API) concepts, computer operating systems, and the OSI model.
- Networking protocols and devices including OSPF, ISIS, BGP, MPLS, SIP, RTP, SNMP, NAT, routers, switches, and stateful packet firewalls.
- Knowledge of physical layer such as fiber, copper, and microwave.
- Certifications a plus through CompTIA Network+, Juniper JNCIA-Junos, Nokia NRS1, CCNA or similar a plus.
- Works collaboratively and builds relationships with other colleagues, customers, and third party service professionals.
- Self-motivated, good written and oral communication skills, and strong interpersonal skills
Note: This is a remote position with travel (25-50%) to support projects in the South Florida region.

Basic Requirements
- Bachelor’s Degree in an engineering or technical discipline and 8+ years of engineering or technical experience
- OR 10 years of engineering or technical experience
- Legal authorization to work in the U.S. indefinitely is required. Employer work permit sponsorship is not available for this position.
