Job description

Agricultural GHG Scientist

This position will work remote/virtual.

As a member of the Truterra team, you will be helping bring agronomic insights and industry connections to farmers, so they can protect and restore their land, and unlock its deeper value.

As a GHG Scientist, you will work with the business to create credible, rigorous, transparent carbon offsets, insets and other assets. Your primary objective will be to provide the scientific and technical backing for Truterra that aligns our work with best-in-class market standards and ensures high quality carbon projects. The successful candidate will provide senior level subject matter expertise on agricultural systems and management practices, soil carbon accounting and sequestration, and watershed management. Problem solving expertise will be critical to this role, as will an ability to communicate and collaborate across functions including with sales, marketing, IT, and others.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Design and implement science-based evaluations and assessments that address questions and challenges related to GHG reductions and removals in agricultural systems
  • Review biogeochemical model inputs and outputs and evaluate model performance and outcomes
  • Design and implement technical projects that help inform program development, data collection strategies, and data validation needs
  • Support various agricultural modeling projects including watershed and water quality modeling efforts
  • Design and build new quantification processes for GHG accounting and other co-benefits including water quality and conservation
  • Be familiar with current research and trends in GHG accounting and co-benefit quantification
  • Support methodology and standards development and verification processes 

Required Experience & Education:

  • MS degree or higher or equivalent work experience
  • 4 or more years of experience in soil science, agricultural modeling, or quantifying GHG reductions and removals in agricultural settings
  • Demonstrated technical understanding of soil and water dynamics in agricultural landscapes and agricultural management practices. Experience with water modeling a plus.
  • In depth understanding of GHG accounting, quantification methods, and sources/sinks/reservoirs. Experience with life cycle assessments in agricultural systems.  
  • Data processing and summarizing skills using Microsoft software, R, SQL, and/or Python.
  • Familiarity with federal and state agricultural databases (e.g., NASS, ARMS, etc.)

Hiring salary is negotiable based on experience: $117,920 - $176,888
