National Division
Shimmick’s National Division operates throughout the central and eastern United States and focuses on water resources including locks, dams, levees and flood control, many along the nation’s coasts and inland waterways. Comprised of legacy companies Morrison Knudsen, Washington Group International, and others, Shimmick’s National Division has decades-long history of delivering projects for repeat clients like New Jersey Transit, where Shimmick has been operating and maintaining the Hudson-Bergen Rail Line for more than 20 years.
The National Division has also delivered numerous projects for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, primarily in the water resources sector along the nation’s inland waterways and coastlines. One such project was the new Olmsted Dam on the Ohio River, where according to USACE, more commerce traverses than any other location on the entire U.S. inland waterways. With the Olmsted lock and dam replacement, economic net benefits to the nation are estimated to be more than $640 million annually.
Responsibilities:
The responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to the following:
- Assists line technician in the maintenance, repair, inspection and testing of the overhead catenary, traction power and electrical distribution systems.
- Under Supervision, will be trained to install, inspect and repair components of the overhead catenary, traction power and electrical distribution systems
- After successfully completing training will be able, under general supervision, to replace defective portions of catenary including wire, hangers, clips, and insulators; measure and adjust sag in wire; install cables, switches, fuses and other attachments on the catenary system
- Assist line technician in responding to electrical system failures and/or malfunctions, and trouble calls
- Document inspections, repairs, daily activities as required either assisting the line technician or when working independently
- Participates in the planning & scheduling for the maintenance and testing of electrical equipment. Understands HBLR physical characteristics.
- Obtains all tools and material necessary for completion of work and ensures they are properly inventoried and maintained.
- Assists during emergencies to restore service.
- Works within the guidelines of the System Safety program by being alert to physical hazards which affect operations and when conditions exist or could develop that would conflict with a safe operating environment.
- Attends safety briefings, assures safety compliance, maintains qualifications [ Book Of Rules ] and coordinates with other departments.
- Flagging protection. Must be qualified to flag after 3 months from date of hire.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Physical/Work requirements:
- Outside exposure to all weather conditions including wind, extreme cold and heat on or in close proximity to railroad tracks, highways & waterways.
- Must be agile and implement safe practices to preclude slips, trips, and falls when working around track, switches, ballast, uneven surfaces and loose material in day, night or portable lighting conditions.
- Climbs and performs duties on ladders, scaffolds, bucket trucks, scissor lifts at heights above 30 feet. Must be able to carry 251b or heavier tool bags.
- Works on bridges [heights], in tunnels, signal towers, at 35 feet or above, and on high speed tracks.
- Must be able to handle strenuous walks along uneven surfaces.
- Must have good visual acuity, including ability to distinguish colors, depth perception and peripheral vision plus normal night vision.
- Must have acute hearing, with the ability to distinguish and separate sounds around heavy machinery, noisy equipment and tools, voices near and at a distance.
- Demonstrate agility and coordination while lifting, stooping, carrying heavy loads.

Qualifications:
Minimum Requirements:
- High School diploma or equivalency
- Candidate must possess a valid Driver’s License, without any suspensions or moving violations within the last three years. A Certified Driver’s Abstract is required to validate driving record.
Preferred Qualifications:
- One year experience performing maintenance, repairs, tests, and inspections on high voltage and/or railroad signal/crossing equipment is preferred.
- Graduating from an accredited program in electrical/electronic training will be accepted in lieu of experience as noted.
- Candidate will be required to learn in a timely manner and be able to implement the rules and regulations for line technician helpers in accordance with the requirements of manual MW-10 [HBLR, Electrical Operating Instructions] for the protection of employees, property, and the operation of trains in electrified territory.
- Ability to exercise good judgment and ability to function under stressful situations.
- Ablity to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
- Ablity to perform field tests, document and/or communicate results to Supervision clearly.
Additional Information:
- This position will require working nights, holidays, and overtime.
- During flagging protection, must be able to stand and perform duties over long periods of time.
