The Role

Position: Network Solution Designer (Non-Union)

Division: Infrastructure Operations

Manager: Jerry Varghese

Location: Alberta

The Network Solution Designer will be accountable for the network design, certification and introduction of services and technology solutions from the project phase to operations. This position is part of the Solutions & Architecture team within the Network Services team, which provides network infrastructure design services for existing or potential future customers. This position will work closely with other teams within the Network Services team, different groups within the organization and the vendors to lead the planning, implementation and maintenance of network solutions. The Network Solution Designer will be creative problem-solvers who are curious, collaborative, and ready to be on the leading edge of technological transformation.

Although the focus of this individual will mostly be project-related tasks, including designing, planning and deployment, the individual will utilize their expertise and technical understanding to assist in escalation to resolve network issues.

The successful candidate will be an integral part of a larger team, providing direct customer support on improving existing infrastructure, new initiatives and projects related to the network services. This is a Non-Union role subject to regular business working conditions, and occasional travel is required. This role is also expected to evolve as ISM’s business evolves.

NOTE: the preferred work location for this position is Alberta; however, the location will be dependent on the location of the successful candidate.

Responsibilities:

  • Collaboratively work with stakeholders (Architects, Sales team, Customers, and Operations) to understand business requirements and develop a detailed solution for network services.

  • Maintain detailed documentation to capture and communicate changing requirements and technologies. Produce and deliver technical documents, diagrams, and presentations.

  • Provide training & documentation in support of the transition to operations.

  • Provide guidance and direction to vendors to resolve issues and influence product roadmaps.  Perform technical research within and outside your expertise domain to optimize existing infrastructure solutions or a net new solution.

  • Build detailed network plans for equipment configurations, rollback plans, impact analysis, and business needs.  Consult the internal security and compliance teams and provide proactive remediation of security initiatives and compliance.

  • Provide technical support for lab (non-production) & production infrastructure (hardware, software, OS, firmware.  Procure lab equipment to achieve efficiency & latest technology trends.

  • Provide technical solutions & support during service outage incidents when escalated.

  • Respond to and resolve escalations and work with internal stakeholders and vendors on incidents.

  • Define long-term vision with minimal known requirements and changing needs.

  • Explore customer feedback and analytics to drive product and service improvements.

  • Proactively ensure optimal performance of existing infrastructure and drive innovation through automation process improvements to enhance productivity.

  • Participate in infrastructure design consulting, vendor engagements, and production implementations while collaborating with various business and technology teams to review requirements and recommend solutions.

Who You Are

Qualifications:

  • Relevant post-secondary education or an equivalent combination of education, experience, training, and 5+ years of experience designing, implementing, and supporting complex network infrastructures.

  • Detailed experience with multiple networking technologies and vendors, including rapid proof of concept to prove key business case metrics.

  • Proven experience bringing leading-edge/next-generation technologies to market.

  • Knowledge of Network Architecture, Security, and Authentication/Accounting systems (Firewalls, IPSec, Radius, TACACS+).

  • Knowledge of SDWAN, QoS, MPLS, TCP/IP networks, NAT, Routing Protocols, VPRN (Virtual Private Routed Network), Cloud etc.

  • Knowledge of transport technologies and circuit providers.

  • Knowledge of Versa SDWAN technology is an add-on advantage.

  • Proven experience fostering collaborative working environments and mentoring.

  • Ability to read, write and speak English and French (Bilingual) is considered an asset.

  • Technical certification (CCNP/CCIE, JNCIS/JNCIP etc.) is vital.

  • Multi-vendor competency is an add-on advantage.

  • Good understanding of routing/switching/security/SDWAN products and platforms.

  • Knowledgeable in network management and backup tools

  • Scripting knowledge is an add-on advantage.

  • Excellent time management and issue follow-up skills, ability to work independently and in a team environment, and ability to work on multiple competing priorities.

  • Understanding of ITSM Framework is essential, preferably ITIL Methodology V3 and V4.

  • Understanding of Problem-Solving and Decision-Making methodologies, preferably Kepner Tregoe.

  • Excellent interpersonal and customer service-focused attitude.

  • Driver’s license and ability to travel.
