Union Tank Car Company (“UTLX”), and its Canadian affiliate Procor Limited, manufacture, lease and repair railcars in North America for railroads and industrial companies who ship by rail. Owned by the Marmon Group and Berkshire Hathaway, UTLX headquarters is in Chicago’s financial district, and Procor headquarters is in Oakville Ontario.

Chicago-based hybrid position requiring at least 2 days in Chicago HQ office per week with about 25% travel. Must have eligibility to work in the US without sponsorship current and future.

DIRECTOR, TECHNOLOGY SOLUTIONS

This is an opportunity to play a leading role in the information technology and organizational transformation of a business looking to set a course for the future.  We are in a period of rapid change.  The Director of Technology Solutions is a new role offering the opportunity to build an organization responsible for supporting and continuously improving our business technology.

In collaboration with fellow IT directors, the Director of Technology Solutions will assist our business partners and customers in improving our processes.  They will develop structures around which technology projects are envisioned, prioritized and delivered.   They will promote continuous improvement and be a leader in simplifying and modernizing the way we work.

SUMMARY

  • Lead the process of definition and development of technology solutions for the Repair and Manufacturing business units, while delivering world class technology deployment execution
  • Evaluate emerging technologies and trends to determine potential impact on the business and recommend adoption where appropriate.
  • Lead a team of project managers and business analysts, augmented at times by consultant firms and contractors.  Direct reports are split between Chicago and Oakville, ON locations and remote locations.
  • Work with the business user community and business unit leadership to identify, estimate and prioritize technology initiatives.  Lead process to gain funding approval for projects when required.
  • Manage the organization and deployment of multiple new and legacy applications throughout the enterprise such as: LeanKit, Dynamics AX, RailcarRX, MARS, A/S400, Engineering Toolkit, Rail Link, RailCar Manager, CPS, Star Query, etc.
  • Lead workouts to ensure technology investment is applied to strong processes.
  • Working with fellow directors, apply appropriate technologies to the business processes.
  • Develop capability to scope development work utilizing both internal and external resources.
  • Develop capability and processes to lead projects through agile, waterfall or hybrid methodologies.  Lead projects from inception to support transition.
  • Create and implement principles of a program management office (tollgates, standard deliverables, status, risks etc.)
  • Manage the organization and deployment of MS SharePoint applications throughout the enterprise.
  • Lead efforts to standardize and promote use of collaboration tools within and beyond IT initiatives.
  • Develop an organization and staffing plan to identify and fill areas of need and training plans to promote growth of team members.
  • Develop requirements/design documentation standards and best practices.
  • Participate as member of senior IT leadership team, in other initiatives as required

CANDIDATE REQUIREMENTS

  • BS in Information Systems or similar field or equivalent work experience.
  • Ability to quickly understand business processes and requirements and translate those into actionable project plans that ensure the business requirements are fully met.
  • At least seven years’ experience as a technology program leader or manager of technology project managers. 
  • Demonstrated leadership of complex business process workouts.  Exposure to LEAN or Six Sigma tools is a plus.
  • Demonstrated experience building business cases for technology initiatives.
  • Demonstrated ability to take IT projects from concept to implementation.
  • Experience with waterfall and agile SDLC.
  • Proven track record of managing large-scale projects to successful outcomes.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage geographically dispersed projects and teams.
  • Exposure to a wide range of application technologies.  This position will partner with technical teams to identify appropriate technology for the task.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to explain technology plainly to people with a wide range of experience (developers to non-technical senior executives).
  • Demonstrated ability to attract and develop team members using tools such as learning plans, succession planning and effective delegation.  Demonstrated background mentoring employees.
  • Ability to work across organizational boundaries and lead by influence.
  • Experience with MS SharePoint desired.  Experience implementing other collaboration tools desired.
  • Eligible to work in the US and Canada w/out sponsorship now or in the future.
