The Merchandising Director is responsible for developing and executing strategies to deliver assigned sales and profit goals.

Work collaboratively with a cross-functional team within a fast-moving environment to develop differentiated and impactful customer-driven assortment strategies.

This collaborative and strategic leader will drive a clear vision for future growth with strong analytical, problem-solving, and interpersonal skills.  This Hanna Andersson leader will balance maximizing business opportunities (known) with pushing for growth in new areas (unknown risks).

Primary Duties (Identified Essential Functions*)
  • Strategic Direction – develop and execute brand-right divisional strategies that meet or exceed financial targets, while delighting our current customers and attracting new customers.
  • Pre-Season Management – manage merchandising activities for owned divisions from competitive analysis, trend analysis, consumer insights, and pre-line targeting
  • Assortment Planning – ensure team is developing clear briefs to Design with financial, AUC, IMU and MSRP targets at the department, pyramid and attribute level.
  • In-Season Management – proficiently analyze and summarize business results to develop data-driven insights and actionable takeaways.  Partner with marketing, site and planning teams to drive in-season results for owned divisions, including pricing and promotions.
  • Analytical Savvy/Hindsighting – deliver weekly, monthly and seasonal hindsights that combine consumer analytics with product performance and clear takeaways.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration – effectively communicate divisional strategies to cross-functional partners and senior leadership, ensuring they have the information to bring the product to life (brand marketing, creative, site, performance marketing, customer associates).
  • Team Leadership & Development – help lead entire merchandising team through key milestones and act as a key liasion for both internal and outside partners.  Mentor and coach direct reports for career development and growth.

  • Required General Knowledge & Skills
  • 10+ yrs merchandising experience in a specialty retail environment, children’s apparel strongly preferred
  • Knowledgeable of trend, aesthetic positioning, and assortment planning ability
  • Demonstrated success in developing profitable merchandise strategies
  • Thorough understanding of merchandise financial planning and key metrics
  • Advanced analytical skills, data-driven, and able to develop and articulate insights to move business forward
  • Ability to problem solve
  • Strong listening skills, and excellent verbal and written communicator
  • Strong interpersonal skills; and have demonstrated ability to communicate throughout an organization
  • Effective working independently as well as in a team environment
  • Able to travel, both domestically and internationally


  • Education & Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Merchandising, Business, or equivalent experience

  • Supervisory Responsibilities
  • Organize and oversee the schedules and work of employees as assigned.
  • Establish goals and criteria, and conducts ongoing performance management for assigned staff.
  • Ensure appropriate staffing to meet objectives; partner with HR to recruit and select appropriate talent.
  • Handle discipline and termination of employees as needed and in accordance with company policy.

  • Working Environment and Conditions
  • Work is conducted in an office environment. The noise level in the work environment is normally quiet and the temperature is typically normal to moderate.
  • Typical work week is business hours Monday through Friday. Overnight travel may be required to attend work related events, training and/or to other company locations.
  • Sedentary work that primarily involves sitting/standing. May occasionally need to lift and /or move up to 10 pounds.
  • Remaining in a stationary position, often standing or sitting for prolonged periods.
  • Moving about to accomplish tasks or moving from one worksite to another.
