Job Summary

The Commercial Lines Underwriting Manager position will provide leadership, guidance and direction to the underwriting staff to achieve profitable underwriting results within the commercial lines department.  The Underwriting Manager will ensure high-quality service is delivered to the independent agents and support the underwriters as they manage each agent for profitability and growth.  This position could be filled as a Commercial Lines Underwriting Manager or Supervisor depending on candidates experience level.  

JOB REQUIREMENTS
  • Communicate Donegal Insurance Group’s underwriting philosophy to the underwriting staff and monitor the book of business for quality and profitability
  • Build and maintain positive agent relationships by delivering quality service and becoming a business partner with each agent to ensure profitability
  • Manage premium production of new and renewal business, measure and report growth to senior management
  • Lead underwriting staff by providing hands-on experience, training and individual performance management plans
  • Allocate resources to ensure that work processes are innovative, efficient and cost effective, enabling the department to meet our customer’s needs and minimize operating expenses
  • Serve as management communication link to other core disciplines to achieve effective inter-departmental operations
  • Effectively translate corporate plans and strategies into measurable actions to achieve desired outcomes and contribute to exceptional customer service and profitable growth
EXPERIENCE
  • Five to ten years of underwriting experience at a company or agency is required
  • A minimum of five years commercial lines underwriting experience is required.
  • A minimum of five years management/supervisory experience with a proven track record of building a successful underwriting team is preferred.
  • Demonstration of self-development through attainment of professional insurance designations, CPCU, ARM, PLU, etc is required.
EDUCATION
  • Bachelor’s Degree with a background in insurance or equivalent experience is required.
  • Continuing education in IIA and CPCU courses is preferred. 
SKILLS/TECHNICAL EXPERTISE
  • Thorough understanding of the trends in the Property & Casualty Insurance industry and the ability to maximize profit and growth in the changing/competitive marketplace 
  • Strong leadership skills, ability to quickly assess performance issues and take corrective measures to resolve issues
  • Results oriented, decisive, ability to make sound business decisions
  • Strong communication/marketing skills, ability to build a business relationship with the independent agency system
  • Possess strong analytical skills, attentive to detail
