The Battery Module Thermal Design Engineer will be responsible for the design and testing of Battery Module thermal system. They will work with the system-level team to ensure the successful integration world class thermal system at the ESS level.  They will foster an environment of collaboration seamlessly with the hardware, software and testing teams and will actively reach out to other teams they interface with. They will ensure that interfaces of batteries and associated hardware/software are well understood and documented.   

This team member will be responsible for planning any/all thermal design analytical, development, verification and certification activities. This person will be responsible for conducting the test setup, instrumenting the hardware, analyzing the data and giving meaningful feedback to the Module Engineering team to act on. This person should be a recognized subject matter expert in the area of thermal and system module design.  

The person in this role will lead a team that delivers on time and launches with excellence. They will foster a culture of accountability and the pride that goes with delivering excellence. The person in this role will be able to reach out across the corporation to collaborate with others outside of Engineering.  


What does a Battery Module Thermal Engineer do at Fluence?
  • Design the thermal module system 
  • Document choices of why certain features were selected and how they help the ESS system be world class 
  • Develop thermal requirements from system requirements 
  • Lead and Manage supplier development including design reviews for thermal module components 
  • Conduct 1D analysis to support quick decisions 
  • Work with the FEA team to further develop analytical models 
  • Conduct correlation testing to correlate FEA models 
  • Support product execution with development and validation testing 
  • Support the UL and IEC certification of the battery system by working with the supplier and the certification agencies. 
  • Coordination and feedback with the engineering and product teams on requirements updates and subsystem validation status. 
  • Troubleshoot cooling system issues during system development 
  • Work with project management to track and maintain schedule. 
  • Travel as needed up to 25%  

  • What does the ideal candidate look like?
  • B.S. in Mechanical Engineering 
  • 4+ years in the development and testing of thermal components especially coldplates 
  • Experience working with and managing supplier development 
  • Experience in thermal HW validation 
  • Experience with DFSS and Design of Experiments is a bonus 
  • Technical knowledge in a broad area of engineering disciplines (Electrical, Electronics, Mechanical, Thermal, Materials, Safety, Test/Validation, Manufacturing) 
  • Experience with UL 1973, UL 9540, and UL 9540A 
  • Experience using MatLab 
  • Strong technical communication skills 
  • Passion for batteries, sharing know-how, and learning from others 
  • Proven self-starter willing to take the initiative
