Job description

Overview

RTI International / Research Triangle Institute (RTI) is both a global research institute and a leading international development organization. We combine these powerful capabilities with those of our partners to co-create smart, shared solutions for a more prosperous, equitable, and resilient world. Based in North Carolina, USA, RTI is one of USAID’s top implementing partners. A commitment to making meaningful change energizes our 6,000 staff who deliver results across eight international development sectors and in more than 80 countries. RTI's Sustainable Growth & Resilience (SG&R) technical unit within the International Development Group brings together RTI experts and capabilities across food security, agriculture, energy, environment, water, governance, and economic opportunity. SG&R will leverage RTI's experience designing and delivering multisectoral programming and technical solutions to respond to climate change, build resilience, and promote economic growth around the world.

SG&R’s Global Food Security and Agriculture portfolio is working to strengthen agricultural markets, engage youth and women as critical leaders of the on- and off-farm workforce, and tackle the dual burden of malnutrition around the globe. RTI’s work helps foster stronger food systems, reduce malnutrition in all its forms, build resilience, and engage the next generation of food security leaders.

Project Description

The goal of the anticipated USAID activity is to increase consumption of healthy diets produced through sustainable food systems by women and children under 5. The Activity will achieve this goal by strengthening both consumer demand for safe, nutritious foods that are part of a healthy diet and the capacity for post-farmgate local food systems actors to meet that demand.

Position Description

The Objective 1 Leader will provide leadership and technical direction for Objective 1 activities related to using private sector approaches to generate consumer demand for healthy diets. The Objective 1 Leader will report to the Project Director. This position will be based remotely or the Washington, DC area, with the location to be determined based on the needs of the project.

This position is contingent upon award and funding.

Responsibilities

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Develop and lead implementation of the project’s strategy for increasing consumer demand for safe, nutritious foods in priority countries.
  • Identify and engage with relevant local private sector actors and other local experts to operationalize the project’s strategy to generate consumer demand for safe, nutritious foods. Mobilize support as necessary across the consortium to assist local actors in implementing consumer demand generation activities that are both effective and evidence based.
  • Collaborate with the project director and other component leads as appropriate to harmonize approaches toward the activity goal. Under the direction of the Project Director, collaborate with the Client (USAID/Washington) in finalization and operationalization of project approaches for consumer demand creation.
  • Contribute to and/or lead, as relevant for the position, strategy development, work planning, regular stocktaking and project adaptation, and reporting.
  • In collaboration with other project staff, document and collate learning from project activities to share across other contexts.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree and 10 years of relevant experience, Master's degree and 8 years of experience, PhD and 3 years of experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Technical experience in and knowledge of consumer demand creation through private sector approaches (marketing).
  • Strong communication skills, both interpersonal and written, and proven ability to develop and communicate a common vision among diverse stakeholders.
  • Understanding of a variety of marketing approaches used in USAID Feed the Future and/or USAID Nutrition Priority countries, especially in sub-Saharan Africa. Experience in collaborating with SMEs and/or communications and/or marketing professionals based in these countries desired.
  • Familiarity and experience working in different cultural contexts.
  • Proficiency in English required; proficiency in another language, especially French, is desired.
