About the role
This position is responsible for managing the Legal Assistants and Law Clerks and and provides expertise in activities relating to the operations of the Legal Department, Claims. Maintain effective communication with their team and ensure they are informed of new process, workflows and updates within the team. Manage the department by monitoring goals and objectives; evaluate performance and hold regular meetings to keep their team informed and manage their performance. Recruit and select qualified employees and ensure successful onboarding. Provide and coordinate training, coaching, mentoring and development opportunities for their team.
We’re looking for an experienced people manager to join our Legal Claims team as Unit Manager, Legal Claims Support. In this role, you’ll oversee the career development, engagement, and day-to-day activities of a dynamic group of Legal Assistants and Law Clerks.
This is a 12-month secondment opportunity available in Toronto.
What you’ll do here:
Oversee the day-to-day responsibilities of the Law Clerks and Legal Assistants.
Establish and communicate clear performance objectives for your team and continually measuring the progress on the attainment of these objectives.
Ensure a high level of employee engagement by continually monitoring overall engagement and creating and executing engagement action plans.
Assessing the strengths and areas of opportunity for your team and putting forth recommendations for improvement.
Providing regular and ongoing feedback, mentoring and coaching to your team.
Identifying key talent and providing ongoing developmental opportunities for the optimization and engagement of our key talent.
Leading the recruitment process, including but not limited to, the interview and selection process and the onboarding of new employees.
Facilitate regular team meetings, one-on-ones and huddles to ensure the two-way flow of information.
Assist your team to understand and apply policies, procedures and theories.
Driving change while maintaining effective communication to ensure your team is informed of new initiatives, processes and/or workflows.
Plan and implement office systems, as well as organize office operations and procedures.
Participate on project-based tasks as assigned by Claims Manager, Director and/or VP Legal Claims.
Compile and analyze statistics and reports while monitoring and predicting legal trends.
What you bring to the table:
A university degree or college diploma.
Experience as a people leader within a legal environment.
Legal experience and knowledge required.
Proven project management skills, where you have planned, led, and successfully executed projects.
Experience implementing and driving change by encouraging innovative thinking and changes in an operation.
Experience driving change within a team by helping team members understand and adapt to the change while providing mobilization during challenging periods and energizing everyone towards the common goal.
Experience leading a team including establishing and measuring performance, providing open and honest feedback and maintaining employee engagement.
An approach to leadership which includes being open and honest, caring for people, driving change, and taking accountability.
