Position Summary

As the Controller reporting to the Finance Director, this position will play a crucial role in supporting the accounting operations of the organization and affiliated trusts. Working within a team of professionals dedicated to delivering the benefits of labor-management trusts, the responsibilities encompass a range of financial responsibilities. Responsibilities include financial reporting and compliance, reconciliations, streamlining accounting processes, and analyzing financial activities. The Controller will collaborate with cross-functional teams, ensuring accurate and timely financial operations while fostering effective communication within the organization.

 

Essential Functions:

Financial Reporting and Compliance

  • Prepare and analyze accurate and timely financial statements, including income statements, balance sheets, and cash flow statements.
  • Prepare custom and ad hoc reports.
  • Conduct financial analysis to identify trends, variances, and areas for improvement.
  • Collaborate with external auditors during financial audits.
     

Accounts Payable & Receivable

  • Collaborate with A/P & A/R Specialist on accounts payable and accounts receivable functions, ensuring accurate and timely processing of vendor bills, payments, grant disbursements, expense reports and A/R invoicing and collections.
  • Review open balances and perform monthly reconciliations.
  • Provide guidance to A/P & A/R Specialist to resolve escalated issues and requests quickly and effectively by determining the appropriate course of action.
  • Provide training and guidance across the organization on A/P and A/R procedures.


Accounting Activities

  • Continuously identify opportunities to streamline accounting processes, improve efficiency, and enhance the accuracy of financial reporting.
  • Support development and maintaining accounting policies and procedures.
  • Maintain the general ledger and chart of accounts, reconciling and reviewing accounts, and ensuring accuracy and completeness of financial data.
  • Month-end bank reconciliation.
  • Review and import third-party administrator (TPA) financial activity for Trusts.
  • Perform investment statement reconciliations and record investment activity.
  • Assist in budgeting and forecasting activities, providing insights for decision-making.
  • Work collaboratively with cross-functional teams, fostering effective communication.
     

Payroll

  • Review payroll entries and reports.
  • Reconcile payroll balance sheet accounts.
  • Review vacation/ severance payouts and other payroll adjustments.
  • Respond to employee inquiries and resolve issues related to employee payroll as backup to Payroll Accountant.
  • Provide training and guidance across the agency on applicable payroll procedures.

 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Solid understanding of accounting principles including nonprofit and grant accounting.
  • Ability to use the following office equipment, tools and machines: MS office tools (including Excel), financial software.
  • A commitment to treating coworkers and participants with respect.

  • Strong analytical thinking and problem-solving skills.
Qualifications

Qualifications

  • 5+ years of progressive financial accounting experience including reconciliations, allocations, reporting, and analysis.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance or related field preferred.
  • Experience working with multiple entities or departments.
  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.
  • Proactive and outcome-driven.
  • Detail-oriented with a high level of accuracy.
  • Proficient in financial software (preference Netsuite or other Oracle system) and Microsoft Excel.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a remote team environment.

 

Working Conditions - Open to OR and WA candidates only

  • Requires occasional lifting and exertion for short periods 

  • Readiness to work occasional long hours, weekends 

  • Able to travel between worksites and/or meeting locations within the state 


Supervisory Responsibilities 

This position is not immediately responsible for supervising other staff members.
