Job description

About the role

This position is with the Global Strategic Communications Council (GSCC), a global network of communications professionals in the field of climate, energy and nature. GSCC is a programme hosted by the Meliore Foundation.

We're looking for an innovative Senior Associate for Food and Nature - Germany with a unique combination of skills who wants to play a major role in tackling climate change.

You’ll be joining our Food and Nature team who lead the GSCC’s work to increase political attention and action on the role that the land-use sector plays in delivering a wide array of public goods including environmental protection. We are a 10 person team of campaigners, media and digital experts who use strategic communications to get food and nature on top of the climate agenda.

Reporting to the Senior Lead for Food and Farming, this new role will focus on setting up our work in Germany - developing the strategy, building our network of partners and working with our German country team to increase political and media attention to our key issues. This is an exciting position with lots of opportunity to shape the role and focus of the work, based on your deep understanding and experience of campaigning on food and farming in Germany.

We’re looking for a unique combination of knowledge of Germany’s food, farming and nature sector, campaigning skills and media know-how.

If this sounds like you, we'd love for you to apply.

How you’ll contribute

  • Developing the communications strategy for food and nature in Germany
  • Building a progressive farmer spokesperson network - identify partners and leaders to help showcase farmers who are supportive of climate action, commissioning research and analysis to support farmer-focused communications
  • Be responsible for the delivery and implementation of the strategy at national level - using a range of strategic communications tactics such as pitching stories to media, digital campaigns, commissioning research and investigations
  • Build and maintain relationships with key partners and spokespeople in Germany - ranging from NGOs, academics, farmer leaders and businesses - through which we deliver our strategic communications work
  • Communications support for other food and nature priority issues in the German media market including work on nature protection and the fertiliser industry.

Our ideal candidate has

  • Extensive work experience in a campaigning and/or media role with deep knowledge of the key challenges and opportunities that campaigning on climate in the agri-food sector brings
  • A strong networker who is able to build and maintain relationships with a core group of partners in the agri-food space
  • Project manager - someone who can turn ideas into communications outputs and manage the delivery of these, working with a range of colleagues and experts to do so
  • The ability to keep abreast of key political debates on a range of agri-food and nature topics through media monitoring and intel gathering
  • Self-starter - someone who is able to work independently to establish relationships and set-up projects
  • Good understanding of campaign communications and what makes a compelling media story, and the ability to advise partners on their communications strategies and outputs
  • Experience of working directly with journalists
  • Based in Germany and fluent German speaker
  • Fluency in written and spoken English, our working language; additional languages are an asset.
  • A genuine interest in and passion for addressing climate change.
  • The disposition to work generously with colleagues in a high-trust global community of peers.
  • The versatile and adaptable skills necessary to flourish in a fast-paced and wide-ranging work environment and work across time zones using tools such as Zoom, Slack and email (Google Workspace).
  • A commitment to an inclusive and empowering approach to facing climate change.

Why join us?

  • Be part of a remote-first, international network of professionals working on climate, energy and nature. We offer coworking access in some locations.
  • Work with a bunch of dynamic, culturally diverse individuals who combine their passion to make a difference with a rigorous and results-oriented approach to work.
  • Enjoy regular opportunities to connect and collaborate with colleagues around the world.
  • A full-time position with an employment contract for 2 years, with possible renewal after this period. Only candidates with the right to work in their location will be considered.

Location: We offer flexible working arrangements, allowing you to work remotely from anywhere in Germany or in a hybrid model with access to our co-working space in Berlin.

Your future workplace

Through our work, we aim to contribute to a world with a safe and stable climate for current and future generations. We hope to build broad support for just, inclusive, and equitable solutions to the climate crisis. Our philanthropically funded work focuses on media debate and public discourse at the global level and in major economies across Asia, Europe, Africa, Australia and the Americas. We support a diverse range of partners across sectors and geographies, helping them add their voices, views and insights to the conversation.

A place to thrive!

We’re an international network that values genuine diversity. We know that tackling the climate emergency will need all of society and we want our network to be reflective of the richness of that society. We are looking for people who bring their best, most professional and effective selves to work. People who are respectful, kind and have a sense of fun. If that sounds like you, we’d love to hear from you.

Your ideas, perspectives, and lived experiences are key to how you go about your work. We encourage people from historically disadvantaged or underrepresented groups to apply.
