The typical starting salary range for this role is determined by a number of factors including skills, experience, education, certifications and location. The full salary range for this role reflects the competitive labor market value for all employees in these positions across the national market and provides an opportunity to progress as employees grow and develop within the role. Some roles at Liberty Mutual have a corresponding compensation plan which may include commission and/or bonus earnings at rates that vary based on multiple factors set forth in the compensation plan for the role.

As a part of our construction product offerings and portfolio, Liberty Mutual is hiring an SDI Underwriter to join our Surety Subcontractor Default Insurance (SDI) team. The SDI Underwriter will work in support of the Underwriting Officer to prospect, develop, and manage new and existing SDI accounts of all sizes and complexities, in support of SDI’s strategy, and in adherence with guidelines, standards and objectives. Subcontractor Default Insurance (SDI) is a growing team within Liberty Mutual Surety.

Responsibilities

  • With the support of the SDI Underwriters and Underwriting Officers, to underwrite and select risks with appropriate pricing, through review and analysis of financial, capacity, and operational systems and controls.
  • Help execute the SDI vision and value proposition that recognizes changing business and competitive environment dynamics, key business drivers, and financial elements. Demonstrate and deliver the value we bring to the different segments of our producer delivery network.
  • Leverage strong United States and Canadian broker relationships to effectively promote and represent Liberty Mutual with customers and at industry events.
  • Support and execute SDI business strategy to successfully propel the product and client segments into a significant, profitable, sustainable, and long-term marketplace leadership position.
  • Market and deliver innovative, industry-leading SDI products and services to a network of producers, effectively leveraging our strengths as a competitive differentiator in the marketplace. Champions underwriting excellence across the business, ensuring adherence to risk appetite, line-setting, standards and guidelines, and rating and pricing adequacy in collaboration with partnering business groups.
  • Develop, leverage, and maintain strong agency / broker relationships. Assist with new product development, implementation, and oversight; actively engage with others in the Liberty Mutual suite of construction surety and insurance offerings as well as collaborate with other underwriters, claims, and actuarial teams to share insights and best practices across the organization.
  • Contributes to optimal portfolio management strategy delivering sustainable profitable growth to the organization.
  • Demonstrate the use of data / analytics and technology to improve risk selection and portfolio management margin improvements, deliver better underwriting outcomes, assist in underwriting decisions, and to review, monitor, and adjust the account portfolio, underwriting guidelines, and overall strategy as needed. Provides strategic guidance and support on key underwriting and growth initiatives to support profitable growth.
  • Special projects as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Degree in Business or related field typically required. A minimum of 3 years expected, typically 5 years or more progressive SDI underwriting experience and/or other related business experience with progressive responsibility desired.
  • Advanced analytical ability and decision-making skills to evaluate and judge underwriting risks within scope of responsibility.
  • Demonstrated ability to make and clearly communicate sound underwriting recommendations that includes complex analyses, both verbal and written, and displays strong interpersonal skills in dealing with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Must demonstrate comprehension of most complex technical underwriting issues and be capable of defining and implementing necessary underwriting and administrative processes/ workflows
