Job description

VetsEZ is seeking a highly driven Senior Software Engineer that has extensive experience and knowledge of designing, coding, testing, debugging, and documenting software in a variety of programming languages to support the Department of Veterans Affairs. This candidate will have a knowledge of the latest programming languages and techniques, as well as extensive experience in creating strategies for developing IT systems and applications.

The candidate must reside within the continental US.

Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with product managers, developers, and other stakeholders to define project requirements and objectives.
  • Execute routine, iterative usability testing to enhance user experience and identify accessibility improvements.
  • Create fully accessible web design, understand how accessibility is created and measured.
  • Be comfortable sitting in on JAWS sessions and trouble shoot accessibility issues.
  • Convert high complex processes into approachable usable applications. Understand and document mental models and how they impact usability.
  • Conduct user research, including interviews, surveys, and usability testing, to gather insights into user needs and preferences.
  • Create wireframes, prototypes, and mockups to illustrate design concepts and user interactions.
  • Design intuitive and engaging user interfaces that align with Human Centered Design (HCD) principles, USWDS (United States Web Design Systems) and VA Digital Service guidelines.
  • Adhere to VA and USWDS (United States Web Design Systems) style standards on fonts, colors and images.
  • Provide guidance on user experience (UX) design direction and strategy along with familiarity with Design Systems & Design tokens and how to use them.
  • Iterate on designs based on feedback from stakeholders and usability testing results.
  • Work closely with developers to ensure the feasibility and implementation of design.
  • Lead discovery activities, including generative research with end users, business stakeholders, conduct accessibility reviews, business process reviews, and data analysis.
  • Conduct formative and contextual user research to understand user goals, needs, journeys, and pain points related to product development.
  • Develop User Experience Research Plans and Summaries, detailing research questions, hypotheses, methodologies, strategies, synthesis of findings, and recommended next steps.
  • Create and maintain comprehensive documentation of design activities, recommendations, and decisions.
  • Take on additional tasks and responsibilities as needed to support team objectives and ensure the success of the project.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Graphic Design, Interaction Design, Human-Computer Interaction, or a related field.
  • Proven experience as a UI/UX Designer or in a similar role, with a strong portfolio demonstrating design expertise and successful projects.
  • Familiarity with Service design and how it relates to building interior facing applications.
  • Solid understanding and practical experience with Human-Centered Design (HCD) principles, focusing on designing with users rather than for them.
  • Experience leading user research activities, including generative and contextual research, usability testing, and user acceptance testing.
  • Ability to synthesize user research findings and apply insights to inform and improve design and development processes.
  • Strong skills in creating and maintaining comprehensive documentation for design activities, research plans, and summaries, including research questions, methodologies, and findings.

Additional Qualifications:

  • Experience working in agile development environments, with a preference for candidates who can adapt quickly to iterative design and feedback cycles.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills, capable of presenting and defending design decisions to diverse stakeholders.
  • Direct experience with VA/DHA/HHS capture is a plus.
  • Familiarity with accessibility standards (Section 508) and best practices, with the ability to conduct accessibility reviews and make design recommendations for inclusive experiences.
