Databases are the beating heart of every business in the world.

Cockroach Labs is the creator of CockroachDB, the most highly evolved cloud-native, distributed SQL database on the planet that scales fast, survives anything, and thrives anywhere. We created CockroachDB to unshackle teams from the constraints of their database. Join us on our mission to simplify how businesses build and operate world-changing applications!

About the role

We are seeking a Senior Technical Program Manager to join our Research & Development Operations team. This role is pivotal in driving operational excellence within our R&D department (Engineering & Product), growing efficient processes, and facilitating seamless collaboration across various teams. The ideal candidate will be highly skilled in designing, planning, and coordinating cross functional improvements in an intensely technical landscape.

R&D Operations plays a crucial role in enabling our organization to exceed customer expectations by shortening feedback loops and accelerating learning. By focusing on coordination and process effectiveness , R&D Operations minimizes friction and allows teams to concentrate on delivering high-quality products and services. They ensure that R&D is constantly improving in all facets while remaining aligned, agile, and  consistently exceeding  the evolving needs of our customers with high quality.

You Will

  • Lead the requirements gathering, program scoping, and solution planning for key initiatives.
  • Define and track success metrics using a combination of quantitative and qualitative measurements.
  • Leverage software development expertise to identify potential obstacles to program success.
  • Perform risk assessment and develop mitigation strategies for potential obstacles.
  • Develop dashboards for self-service monitoring of project status and delivery to objectives.
  • Continuously assess program execution for improvement opportunities and alignment to corporate goals.
  • Contribute to methodology definition, process maturation and continuous improvement of the Operations department.

You Have

  • 8+ years of experience successfully defining and delivering complex and highly technical programs.
  • Familiarity with agile methodologies and real world application in a cloud software environment.
  • Extensive experience tailoring Jira to a company’s needs and the pros/cons of configuration decisions.
  • In depth technical knowledge of software development practices and technologies, especially in a SaaS environment.

The Team

Reporting to Colin Minihan, Director of R&D Operations

Colin is responsible for ensuring that operations within the R&D department are as efficient and impactful as possible. He has built and managed multiple high performing program management organizations at various companies, often during crucial growth stages. His love of learning and building extends beyond his profession in software, always looking for the next DIY project or outdoor hobby in the Pacific Northwest.

Isaac Wong - EVP of Engineering

Isaac is responsible for the health of the engineering organization at Cockroach Labs. He partners closely with teams to ensure we have a balanced culture that promotes quality and innovation in pursuit of our goals. Before joining Cockroach Labs Isaac was in life sciences for 16 years with Medidata Solutions where he had a front row seat on the exciting ride from a 30 person startup to more than 2000 people worldwide. But the lure of distributed, resilient, and consistent SQL databases, along with the amazing technology and culture at Cockroach Labs proved too much. When not working he likes to draw, play the piano, and search NYC for cannoli's with his wife and kids.
