Job description

At Wizards of the Coast, we connect people around the world through play and imagination. From our genre-defining games like Magic: The Gathering® and Dungeons & Dragons® to our growing multiverse, we continue to innovate and build new ways to foster friendship and connection. That’s where you come in!

Are you a Storyteller and Game Designer who loves the intersection of mechanics, lore and flavor? Can you weave tales and build worlds, while keeping your head in both the Fun and the Future of gaming?

What you'll do:

On any given day in the Magic TCG Studio, you could:

  • Support the development of Magic web fiction development, story outlines and character dossier materials as delegated by the Story Lead. Review fiction material, providing feedback as needed.
  • Coordinate with game designers, narrative leads, and product architecture to ensure web fiction is supporting the goals and needs for card set.
  • Partner with Narrative Worldbuilding Set Leads to ensure set story is well integrated into the cardsets (especially through collaboration on the Story Spotlight Development process).
  • Collaborate with Creative Text Lead on opportunities to bring elements of set fiction into the cardsets through creative text, while also supporting card, plane and character naming as needed.
  • Develop and coordinate high volume of story and process documentation.
  • Support Story Lead in sourcing writers for contract work and expanding our writer pool with new and diverse voices.
  • Provide appropriate feedback and support to internal and external collaborators to assure story continuity for character and lore. This may include providing reviews, feedback and guidance to internal Marketing & Packaging teams, as well as external Licensing and Publishing partners.
  • Participate in public-facing interviews, panels, and appearances as needed.
  • Participate in Story and Worldbuilding creative brainstorms.
  • Participate in play testing to foster collaborative communication between groups and make sure card set is aligned with each team’s needs.

What you'll bring:

We are looking a curious, adaptable, and creative new team member to bring their robust worldbuilding, collaborative communication, and game design skills to Magic! Magic produces multiple worlds, hundreds of characters, and thousands of cards per year, and we are a high-talent, welcoming team seeking someone with:

  • Skilled writer with experience generating and editing long and short form fiction. Narrative background with an existing entertainment intellectual property a plus.
  • A passion for generating unique and compelling narrative content with a strong valuation of inclusive storytelling.
  • Excellent organizational, communication, and collaboration skills. An orientation towards both ownership and flexibility in the design process.
  • A deep love for and understanding of the world design process within a game design environment.
  • A passion for feedback and data to better inform their work. A bias toward action and eagerness to iterate on ideas.
  • A solid working knowledge of Magic lore and basic understanding of the TCG/CCG design space.

If a Worldbuilding Game Design role working on Magic that offers fun creative challenges and the potential to level up your leadership responsibilities sounds like an excellent fit — get in touch! In the Wizards TCG Studio, we believe diversity of experience is fundamental to creating broadly accessible and fun gaming experiences for *all* of our players. We encourage everyone to consider being a part of our team.
