Privacy Officer

Compensation information: “The posted compensation range of “$102,937 - $160,977 annually is a reasonable estimate that extends from the lowest to the highest pay Nebraska Medicine in good faith believes it might pay for this particular job, based on the circumstances at the time of posting.  Actual compensation for this particular role will be determined at the time of offer based on years of relevant experience”

The individual selected for this position will lead a privacy team and supervise the privacy program for Nebraska Medicine, an academic medical center, and its educational partner, the University of Nebraska Medical Center (UNMC).  The key responsibilities for this position include:

  • Oversee and direct the privacy department planning and procedure development as well as lead a group of privacy analysts and manage their work.

  • Act as an independent and objective resource to ensure that clinical, research, and administrative privacy concerns across Nebraska Medicine and UNMC are being appropriately evaluated, investigated, and resolved.

  • Identify potential areas of privacy vulnerability and risk, develop correction action plans for resolution of problematic issues, and provide guidance of risk mitigation.

  • Oversee all elements of the privacy program that serves the clinical and research missions of Nebraska Medicine and UNMC including privacy investigations, mitigation and remediation, and ongoing development and review of privacy education initiatives, policies, and procedures.

  • Perform enterprise-wide and department specific clinical, research, and administrative privacy risk assessments, conduct relevant audits, and assist departments in establishing monitoring mechanisms.

  • Monitor legal and regulatory activity regarding applicable local, state, and federal privacy laws, rules, and regulations, formulate strategy, and implement program objectives in order to meet those legal requirements.

  • Participate in Nebraska Medicine and UNMC committee meetings to provide privacy-related input when necessary.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a business or healthcare related field.
  • Minimum seven (7) years’ experience in healthcare privacy and at least four (4) years managing and leading others
  • Privacy certification through AHIMA, HCCA, or other nationally recognized privacy certification.
  • Advanced knowledge of federal and state privacy laws, rules and regulations applicable to an academic medical center which also conducts medical research.
  • Demonstrate effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Effective critical thinking and problem-solving skills, project management, process improvement, and operational analysis.
  • Understanding of management information needs in a healthcare environment.
  • Ability to work with a diverse group of healthcare professionals in a matrix environment.
  • Ability to lead and develop others, and display analytical acumen, research capabilities and data analysis skills.
  • Must have excellent analytical, planning and decision-making skills.
  • Demonstrated experience working with electronic health records (EHR).

Preferred Qualifications:

• Master's degree in business administration or healthcare administration preferred.
