Job description

Overview:

The Senior Counsel provides advice and counsel regarding a broad range of legal matters, specifically manages all regulatory functions and government interactions, and generally assists the company at legal proceedings, government inspections, professional meetings and/or administrative hearings. This role is responsible for overseeing regulatory compliance and legal support related to environmental, health & safety (EHS), and manufacturing operations. This role collaborates closely with EHS and manufacturing teams, as well as other business partners throughout the company, to monitor and ensure compliance with all applicable legislation, statutes, laws and regulations, respond to government agency complaints and inspections, assist in regulatory matters, update company policies, and manage product liability claims and litigation. The Senior Counsel provides strategic legal guidance to protect the organization and ensure regulatory compliance across all business operations.

 

Responsibilities:
  • Support the Chief Legal Officer & General Counsel in overseeing the legal aspects of the company. Implement short/long-term strategies at the direction of the CLO/GC that may impact the company’s legal function. Recognize when to elevate certain matters to the attention of CLO/GC.
  • Collaborate with EHS and manufacturing teams to ensure compliance with federal, state, and local laws and regulations, advise on regulatory risks, and ensure compliance programs meet legal standards.
  • Monitor regulatory changes and updates, ensuring company policies and procedures are adjusted accordingly.
  • Assist in government agency complaints, inspections, and inquiries, acting as a legal representative in regulatory investigations.
  • Provide legal guidance on product liability claims, managing the litigation process and working with external counsel as needed.
  • Interpret and prepare legal documents; advocate Company interests in assigned matters; analyze proposed and existing legislation.
  • Oversee and participate in the preparation, negotiation, and approval of policies, ensuring compliance with environmental and safety regulations.
  • Respond to government audits, regulatory inspections, and notices, providing defense strategies to mitigate legal risks.
  • Advise leadership and management teams on regulatory obligations and potential impacts on business operations.
  • Review and update internal compliance, privacy/data protection, and risk management policies to ensure ongoing legal compliance.
  • Provide legal support in product recalls and related regulatory actions, collaborating with internal teams to minimize legal exposure.
  • May lead cross-functional teams or projects, including annual compliance training initiatives. Works independently, with regular guidance from the CLO/GC.

 

Qualifications:
  • Juris Doctor (JD) from an accredited law school.
  • Minimum of 5 years of legal experience, with a focus on regulatory compliance, government investigations, and product liability.
  • Admission to practice law in at least one U.S. jurisdiction.
  • Valid attorney’s license.
  • Intermediate knowledge of MS Office (Word, Excel and PowerPoint).
  • Oral and written communication skills. Research skills. Judgment. Leadership skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

 

  • Experience in handling regulatory compliance within a manufacturing or industrial environment.
  • Proven experience in managing EHS-related regulatory issues, product liability claims and working with external regulatory agencies.

 

Physical Demands/Work Environment:

  • Primarily office-based with occasional travel for government inspections or litigation-related activities.
  • Hearing, seeing, sitting, standing, talking, typing, visual acuity, walking.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
