The Women's Equality Center complements and strengthens the work of organizations in Latin America and the Caribbean to develop long-term and big-picture messaging frameworks around emerging issues and political opportunities linked to reproductive freedom and justice.

About The Organization

The Women's Equality Center (WEC) provides strategic communications and campaign support to the reproductive health, rights, and justice field at all levels, complementing and strengthening the work of organizations in Latin America and the Caribbean via grants, integrated policy and communications campaigns, and rapid-response operations. WEC currently operates across 8 countries in Latin America and the Caribbean: Mexico, Brazil, Colombia, Honduras, the Dominican Republic, Argentina, Chile, and El Salvador, in addition to other regional work.

About The Role

What You'll Do

The Communications Manager will manage WEC's key relationships with media consultants and journalists across the U.S., Latin America, and the Caribbean. The Communications Manager will play a key role in supporting WEC's communications strategies by crafting compelling narratives and pitching stories to journalists that advance WEC's mission. This includes drafting bilingual press materials, developing press strategies, managing media relationships across multiple geographies, and coordinating interviews that elevate the thought leadership of WEC and our partners. Additionally, they will collaborate with the Communications and Programs teams to create tailored media strategies for on-the-ground partners, support special initiatives, and ensure timely updates that maintain accurate data.

This role is ideal for a highly motivated self-starter who understands the transformative power of narrative and storytelling and who wants to use their skills to expand WEC's reach and amplify the mission-critical work of our partners.

Key Responsibilities

Responsibilities Include But Are Not Limited To

Media Relations and Press Management:

  • Contribute to overall communications strategies and tactics with a focus on shaping strong narratives and pitching stories to reporters and journalists that further WEC's mission
  • Draft press releases, talking points, memos, op-eds, and other communications materials as needed in both English and Spanish
  • Design and develop press strategies and materials, including press kits and events
  • Serve as one of WEC's contacts for the press across the United States and Latin America
  • Coordinate press interviews for WEC principals and partners, as needed

Project Management And Partnership Support

  • In collaboration with the Communications and Programs teams, work with partners on the ground to develop media strategy and create materials specifically tailored to their needs
  • Support partner organizations in an effort to improve their press and media reach
  • Support special projects, such as media grants, foreign delegations, and other initiatives as assigned
  • Ensure timely updates to press clip trackers using tracking systems (e.g., Critical Mention, Google Alerts), maintaining up-to-date records of media coverage
  • Maintain updated press lists, including contact information and beats for key journalists and media outlets

Who You'll Work With

  • You will report to the Director of Strategy & Communications
  • You will frequently collaborate with other members of the Communications team including Directors, Managers, Associate Directors, and Coordinators
  • You will partner closely with teams across the organization including: Policy and Programs teams

Additional Qualifications Include

  • Excellent communicator in Spanish and English with the ability to communicate with depth and nuance in writing and conversation in both languages (Please note that this is a required skill). We will also consider candidates with bi-lingual fluency across English and Portuguese
  • At least 5 years of experience in communications work aimed at pushing policy, political, or cultural progress. This can include:
    • supporting litigation, community organizing, coalition work, and/or other defensive actions
    • helping to influence public opinion and catalyzing action on issues of reproductive health/rights/justice or social justice more generally at a social sector organization or agency
    • prior work on Capitol Hill or supporting communications for a U.S. based political campaign (local, state, or federal)
  • Strong writing, editing and proofreading skills, with a knack for creative and engaging copywriting, and an eagle eye for editing
  • A keen understanding of how to reach different audiences, especially when using persuasive messaging, and be efficient in finding different angles to capture press interest
  • Strong virtual communication, collaboration, and flexibility: efficiency and comfort with technology, including Slack, Google Suite, CRMs; responsiveness via email and WhatsApp, and willingness to participate in weekly group calls or as needed
  • High attention to detail, effective follow through, and comfortable multitasking and managing many projects simultaneously, and under tight deadlines
  • A learning orientation that demonstrates openness to continuous improvement and adaptability and an ability to thrive in a feedback-driven environment
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, and the ability to work with and respect people of different cultures and viewpoints
  • Passion for making a difference; a growth mindset, can-do attitude, versatility, and openness to engaging in a spectrum of our work

Flexible Work Environment

Women's Equality Center is a flexible/remote working environment, with team members working across the United States and Latin America. However, this is a U.S.-based position and U.S. work authorization is required.

Travel

The Communications Manager will be expected to travel (including internationally), up to 25% of the time, some of which may occur over weekends or holidays.
