General Scope and Summary
The Data Engineering Team, part of the Digital and Enterprise Capabilities Group, is responsible for driving the strategy, implementation, and delivery of data and analytics capabilities across Sage's marketing and market access functions. This central team aims to deliver "Next-Gen Value" by establishing core data and analytics capabilities necessary to manage and utilize data as a vital enterprise asset. The Director, Commercial Data Engineering, will lead product development, delivery, and strategy for the Data engineering products supporting Marketing and Market access sub-functions. This role will collaborate with senior leaders across the organization, particularly in marketing and market access, to leverage data technologies and drive business growth.
Roles and Responsibilities
- Data Engineering Strategy & Leadership: Introduce and implement next-generation data engineering principles and processes to enhance our marketing and market access functions. Determine and advocate for software directions, cloud solutions, and methodologies for advanced analytics.
- Product Roadmaps: Develop and promote Commercial Data products roadmaps, ensuring alignment with other Sage teams and functions.
- Project Initiation, Architecture, Design, and Implementation: Translate business requirements into high-level architecture and design documentation for data projects. Play a critical role in project ideation and proof of concept development.
- Project Delivery Oversight: Oversee and participate in the delivery of data engineering projects, providing technical leadership and guidance to internal and external engineering teams.
- Stakeholder Engagement: Collaborate with marketing and market access stakeholders to gather requirements, align technology solutions, and support the strategic goals of these functions.
- Vendor Management: Lead technical assessments of vendor products and new technologies, ensuring they meet performance, capacity, and stability requirements.
- Team Development: Build and develop the Commercial Data Engineering team, filling open roles as needed and fostering a collaborative and innovative team environment.
Experience, Education and Specialized Knowledge and Skills

Excellent interpersonal skills, ability to develop important relationships with key stakeholders, ability to identify issues and raise to key stakeholders in order to develop relevant and realistic plans, programs and recommendations.
Basic Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree with 8+ years of experience in data engineering and Commercial data product development
- 5+ years of experience building large-scale data platforms in the healthcare or life sciences industries
Preferred Qualifications
- Degree in Bioinformatics, Computer Science, or similar field preferred.
- Master’s degree preferred.
- Experience working in Marketing and Market Access domains to drive business value.
- Proficiency with data technologies such as Snowflake, Databricks, cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, GCP), and advanced analytics.
- Knowledge of data integration, big data, AI, and machine learning concepts.
- Strong technical and architectural skills, with the ability to communicate complex technical issues in a simple manner.
- Proven track record of collaborating with senior leadership to develop and communicate strategic roadmaps.
- Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to develop realistic solutions and recommendations.
- Ability to translate strategy into actionable plans and to guide teams towards achieving them.
- Passion for data and analytics as key drivers of corporate performance.
- Ability to contribute individually while leading a multifaceted team.
- Intellectual agility and flexibility in defining and executing long-term strategies.
- Experience working with all levels of management and consulting with key business stakeholders. An ability to influence for greater outcomes.
- Strong team player that has a customer service approach and is solution oriented.
- Attention to detail and the ability to work individually, within a multi-disciplinary team, as well as with external partners and vendors.
