FRIB Digital Communications Manager

Position Summary

Michigan State University (MSU) operates the Facility for Rare Isotope Beams (FRIB) as a user facility for the U.S. Department of Energy Office of Science (DOE-SC), supporting the mission of the DOE-SC Office of Nuclear Physics. FRIB provides researchers with one of the most advanced tools of modern science to study rare isotopes, or short-lived nuclei not normally found on Earth. Hosting what is designed to be the most powerful heavy-ion accelerator, FRIB enables scientists to make discoveries about the properties of rare isotopes, nuclear astrophysics, fundamental interactions, and applications for society, including in medicine, homeland security, and industry. User facility operation is supported by the DOE-SC Office of Nuclear Physics as one of 28 DOE-SC user facilities. MSU’s nuclear physics graduate program is a top-ranked program nationally, according to U.S. News & World Report .

Purpose

The FRIB Digital Communications Program Manager will be responsible for the development and execution of the FRIB Laboratory’s digital communications program, including websites, social media, video, and digital assets, per U.S. Department of Energy Office of Science (DOE-SC) standards and requirements, and in line with best practices executed at other DOE-SC national laboratories and user facilities.

Major Duties/Responsibilities

  • Responsible for creating compelling content for a broad range of audiences, platforms, and channels, in coordination and consultation with FRIB subject matter experts, per established standards and requirements in line with DOE-SC requirements and best practices executed at other DOE-SC national laboratories and user facilities.
  • Responsible for maintaining, updating, and consistently executing all standards and requirements related to website management, in concert with industry best practices and MSU and DOE-SC standards and requirements, and propose improvements to improve content based on metrics and data, and streamline production.
  • Responsible for developing digital communication strategy for promotional and informational material for social media and digital media, integrated across laboratory channels, with measurable results, per established standards and requirements, and production schedules, in close collaboration with various scientific and operational groups at the laboratory.
  • Responsible for establishing and managing stock galleries of standard photos and videos, organized per set standards to ensure consistency and usability; audit, archive, and update on established schedule and as needed, and recommend improvements.
  • Maintain proficiency in industry-current digital communications standards and best practices, content management and monitoring systems, and train student employees.
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties in this job classification.

Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities

  • Demonstrated experience with generating compelling social media content and managing social media campaigns across various platforms including Facebook, Twitter/X, and Instagram.
  • Experience with web and social media content management systems (Drupal, WordPress, Joomla, Ghost, Sprinklr, etc.)
  • Demonstrated experience with Google Analytics and similar tools to measure and track efficacy of web and digital programs.
  • Writing, editing, and verbal communication skills, especially related to marketing and media communications.
  • Experience in creative digital and print media – including long and short form video production, identity design, graphic design, newsletters, flyers, brochures, photography, merchandise, etc.

Minimum Requirements

Knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing a four-year college degree program in Journalism, Telecommunications, or Public Relations; one to three years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in public and media relations, composing, editing and publication production, news, broadcasting, and print media, and/or marketing, advertising, and creative services; graphic design; word processing; desktop publishing; web design; presentation; spreadsheet and/or database software; public presentation; or radio production; or computer programming/technology; experience managing content for social media channels; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Desired Qualifications

Four-year college degree in Digital Communications, Journalism, Telecommunications, Graphic Design, Public Relations, Marketing, or related Liberal Arts programs or equivalent combination of education and experience in Communications.
